Peanutsmight be the funniest comic strip of all time, and that’s something that can be said for every era of its half a century of syndication.Charles M. Schulz createdPeanutsin 1950, and produced new comic strips until his death in 2000. Throughout that time, Schulz crafted truly timeless jokes and gags that stick with readers long after they read them - including one in particular.

As of September 2024, an entire month’s worth ofPeanutscomic strips turned 60 years old. While many might think that, because of their age, those jokes wouldn’t hold up for modern readers, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, one running gag alone proves that sentiment true, as it will have readers laughing hours after reading it - and it’s far from the only one. Here are the10 funniestPeanutscomics that just turned 60!

Snoopy supporting a random protesting bird.

10Snoopy is Confused Yet Supportive Upon Seeing a Bird with a Sign

Peanuts- August 14, 2025

One day, while sitting on the grass and minding his own business,Snoopy sees a single bird marching with a sign. There’s nothing on the sign except an exclamation mark, yet the bird seems adamant about spreading their unclear message. When the bird walks away, Snoopy says, “I can’t quarrel with that”, partly because he has no idea what the bird was trying to say, and also in a display of support despite the confusion.

Snoopy has long-been an ally for birds, proven true by his friendship with Woodstock as well as the formation of Snoopy’s Beagle Scouts (which consists entirely of Woodstock’s family). So, if this bird has something to say, Snoopy will gladly listen - even if he has no clue what he’s listening to.

9Snoopy Gets Even More Wrapped-Up in This Bird’s Unclear Message

Peanuts- August 02, 2025

After noticing this protesting bird, Snoopy decides to stick around and hear more about what it has to say. Snoopy can confirm that, whatever this bird is saying, they’re saying it passionately. And that is the real point of this running gag, as it highlights something that’s just as true in the real world as it is in this comic strip: how one says something is often more important than what they are saying.

This bird is passionate about their cause, waving their sign around with vigor and excitement. Snoopy feels that passion, even if he doesn’t understand their cause. Andbecause this bird is so passionate about what they believe in, Snoopy wants to be supportive. It’s an interesting piece of social commentary that can be applied to practically anything.

8Things Start to Heat Up During This ‘Bird Demonstration’, & Snoopy’s Caught in the Middle

Peanuts- August 03, 2025

While Snoopy is watching the ‘exclamation mark bird’ waving their sign around, he sees another bird walking over to them, and this one is holding a sign with a question mark on it. Snoopy can feel the tension growing between them immediately, and before long, the two birds start fighting each other. It seems they stand for differing causes, andtheir demonstrations quickly turn violent as a result - and Snoopy finds himself right in the middle.

This is another interesting piece of social commentary, as it shows one side of an argument passionately ‘screaming’ about their cause, while the other side is questioning that stance. The ‘exclamation mark bird’ doesn’t want to be questioned, while the ‘question mark bird’ won’t be satisfied until they have an answer, leading to conflict. Again, this can be applied to just about any sociological situation, all while delivering a visually hilarious comic strip.

7Snoopy Meets Another Bird Standing for a Different Cause

Peanuts- June 27, 2025

After the ‘exclamation mark bird’ and the ‘question mark bird’ stop their unseemly display of physical violence during what should be a peaceful demonstration of their respective beliefs, Snoopy sees yet another bird with their own sign. This bird has a sign with a semicolon on it. Perhaps this bird wants to bridge the gap between the ‘exclamation mark’ and ‘question mark’ stances, or maybe it’s representing an entirely different cause altogether. Either way, Snoopy is left more confused than when this whole thing started.

It seemsSnoopy can’t keep track of these birds' different causes, whether they be political parties, specific issues, or personal beliefs. This whole thing started when Snoopy saw a bird with a sign and thought it was interesting, but now he’s totally wrapped-up in a seemingly political argument that he definitely doesn’t understand.

6Snoopy Meets One Final ‘Sign Bird’ with the Power to Change Other Birds' Minds

Peanuts- June 11, 2025

As these demonstrations continue, one final bird joins with their own sign. This bird is holding a sign with a comma on it, and initially, the ‘exclamation mark bird’ is vehemently against what the ‘comma bird’ stands for. The ‘exclamation mark bird’ screams and shouts in the ‘comma bird’s’ face, spewing their message in an aggressive tirade. But then, the ‘comma bird’ makes one quick point about their cause, and as Snoopy himself points out, that’s all it took for the ‘exclamation mark bird’ to give up on their causeentirely.

Whatever this ‘comma bird’ stands for, it seems to be indisputable, as the point the bird made was enough to make the most passionate bird among those demonstrating completely change sides.

5The ‘Comma Bird’ Manages to Unite the Previously Fractured Bird Community

Peanuts- June 14, 2025

In the grand finale of this running ‘bird gag’, the ‘comma bird’ has united the entire bird community. The birds were previously at each other’s throats, marching for different causes and hating the birds who stood for a different cause than them. But, it seemsthe ‘comma bird’ was able to bring all the birds together, as their cause evidently made the most sense to the vast majority of the birds (even if it still makes no sense to the reader).

While this running gag is filled with sociological metaphor and political commentary, it’s important to also take what’s going on at face value. When one does that, they’ll see how hilariously absurd this entire saga truly was. Birds fighting over punctuation for reasons that were never made clear to anyone, including Snoopy? Ridiculous - and hilarious.

Linus painting a mural inside Snoopy’s dog house.

4Snoopy’s Dog House Gets a ‘Sistine Chapel’ Upgrade Thanks to Linus

Peanuts- July 13, 2025

Linus crawls out from inside Snoopy’s dog house while Charlie Brown stands out front. Charlie Brown asks Linus how the mural is going, and Linus admits that it’s hard to paint while lying on his back. Linus then says that the hardest part isn’t the painting itself, but putting up all the scaffolding - which is obviously absurd and utterly hilarious.

This comic strip is a play on the Sistine Chapeland how it was painted by Michelangelo. The real-life artist had scaffolding built so that he could paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, lying on his back as he did so. And now, Linus is doing the same thing to Snoopy’s dog house, which is a decidedly less intense job that really shouldn’t require scaffolding at all. But, if Snoopy’s dog house is getting the ‘Sistine Chapel treatment’, at least Linus is making it authentic.

3Linus is a Perfectionist to a Fault, & Snoopy Thinks He Should Lighten Up

Peanuts- June 13, 2025

Linus is showing Charlie Brown the mural he’s painting on the ceiling of Snoopy’s dog house, while Snoopy is lying on the roof, listening to the conversation. Snoopy hears Linus explaining every historical depiction to Charlie Brown, and justifying certain creative liberties for some of the historical figures, as he doesn’t know what a few of them looked like. Snoopy then responds to Linus over-explaining his creative liberties in a comment he makes to himself, “A lack of knowledge forgivable in a mural painter who is only six years old!”

Linus is clearly a perfectionist (a direct result of his higher-than-average intelligence), and Snoopy definitely thinks he should lighten up- he is only a six-year-old kid, after all!

Peanuts strip: Snoopy promoting National Dog Week, and Linus offering his support.

2Linus is Aggressively Supportive of Snoopy’s Cause (but In the Wrong Way)

Peanuts- July 24, 2025

It seems Snoopy was inspired by the birds he encountered earlier, because in thisPeanutscomic strip, he has his own sign with his own cause that he wants to make people aware of. Snoopy’s sign reads, “This Is National Dog Week”, and he’s walking around with it to spread awareness and garner support. When Linus sees Snoopy and his sign, the six-year-old kid tells Snoopy that he’s totally behind him, saying, “I think it’s wonderful when a person like yourself takes the time to promote such a really worthwhile cause”.

While Linus' words seemed supportive, and exactly what Snoopy was looking for, his phrasing was condescending and made Snoopy feel embarrassed. It’s as ifLinus was giving Snoopy unsolicited validation for promoting his own cause rather than simply supporting the cause itself, which is the wrong way to offer support to a person or group.

Snoopy watching a leaf fall to the ground.

1Snoopy Thinks 1 Leaf Didn’t Fall, He Was Pushed

Peanuts- June 11, 2025

On this fall day, Snoopy is enjoying the outdoors by sitting under a tree and watching the falling leaves. AsSnoopy watches one leaf fall gently to the ground, he has a dark thought: that leaf was pushed. It seems that - to Snoopy - the idea that a leaf would merely fall of its own accord is unthinkable, therefore foul play had to be involved. Obviously, this is absurd, though this isn’t the first time Snoopy has expressed his concern over falling leaves.

ThroughoutPeanuts, Snoopy has regularly expressed his concern over the falling leaves, with the idea of them being raked and bagged his most pressing concern. However, it seems the mere act of falling is enough to alarm Snoopy, especially when he believes that this leaf didn’t fall, he was pushed. And that’s why this is one of the 10 funniestPeanutscomics that just turned 60!
