Cassandra Cain Returns to theBatgirlTitle After 18 Years

Cassandra’s Solo Title Begins in November

Cassandra Cain’s original and long-runningBatgirltitle launched in 2000 and has the honor of being the firstBatgirlseries in DC history.Cass, of course, picked up the mantle from the original Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, and eventually passed the name on to Stephanie Brown before the three characters began sharing the role during DC’s Infinite Frontier era. Eighteen years have passed since Cass' original ongoing series, but she has co- and guest-starred in many since, including the recentBatgirlsseries,Spirit World, andthe currentBirds of Preyongoing series, in which she will still appear as DC All In continues its roll-out.

Cassandra Cain is one of Gotham’s most compelling characters.

ThoughCassandra Cain never fully disappeared from DC lore— except for the first, controversial years of the New 52 — to have her returning to her own solo title is one of the most thrilling DC All In announcements yet — and that’scounting the Absolute Universe news.

Cass' origin, her commitment to Batman’s sense of justice and morality, and her own complicated family history — including and especially with Lady Shiva — make herone of Gotham’s most compelling characters. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that she’s considered to be among DC’s best combatants, if not the best of all time. She’s the perfect choice for an introspective martial arts story, as Brombal and Miyazawa are promising.

Batgirl Has Earned Her Place in the DC All In Line-up

Panel fromDetective Comics#1086 by Ram V, Stefano Raffaele, Lee Loughbridge, and Ariana Maher

Though the last Batgirl-oriented title,Batgirls, only ended in 2023, the Batgirl-sized hole in DC’s Gotham line absolutely needed to be filled, and there’s no better time than during a new-reader-friendly, line-wide “relaunch,” and with a character as beloved as Cassandra Cain. The action-oriented nature of the story will surely attract readers, but Cass fans can only hope her spirit, sense of justice, and unending loyalty will get those readers to stick around. She had to wait eighteen years for her chance, butCassandra Cainis finally back in theBatgirlspotlight, and hopefully for many years to come.
