Smallville’s potential sequel might not end up happening after one of theDCshow’s creators issued new comments on the project’s chances.Smallvilleis one of the best Superman adaptationswe have ever had. It’s funny that the show was technically about Clark Kent, not the Man of Steel, but overSmallville’s ten seasons, Clark got to meet a lot of the heroes he would be working with and the villains he would be fighting as Superman. There have been many greatlive-action DC shows, butSmallvillestands as the best for me.
That is why I have always hoped that aSmallvillesequel series would happen. After all,the DC show ended with Welling’s Clark Kent becoming Superman in its last episode. I want to see how that next chapter of his life plays out, and while theSmallville Season 11comics provide a nice look into that, I would love to have Welling and the rest of the cast back as their characters to explore how they do as their fully realized DC Comics selves. While aSmallvillesequel series is more or less in development, things are not looking good.

The Smallville Sequel Series Has Just Received An Update
The DC Series' Creators Would Be Involved
The two main stars of the DC series are the ones behind the planned sequel.Tom Welling and Lex Luthor actor Michael Rosenbaum have been developing concepts for the seriesfor the last couple of years. They have even seen the animation for it and have a poster with John Glover’s Lionel Luthor looming over the characters, both of which have not been publicly released. I’m excited about the prospect of aSmallvilleanimated sequel series and how Welling and Rosenbaum want to get as many actors to return as possible, with the show’s co-creators returning to write the sequel.
I Can’t Believe DC’s First 2025 Show Introduced Superman In Episode 1 & Ignored Him Until Episode 9
Superman returns in the first DC series of 2025, and the Man of Steel plays a key role in the TV show’s finale after going missing for a long time.
Recently, theSmallvillesequel series got its first 2025 updatefrom Al Gough, one ofSmallville’s co-creators. According to Gough, he believes that Warner Bros. Discovery’s current Superman movie reboot, withtheJames Gunn movie starring David Corenswetas the Man of Steel debuting in July, prevents any movement from happening regarding the Smallville sequel plans. While Gough noted how the popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting a Hulu reboot, so Smallville could also come back in the future, I feel less confident about the Superman show’s return after the creator’s new comments.

David Corenswet’s Superman Is Not Going Anywhere
James Gunn’s DCU Is Only Starting
After the end of the old DCEU, Gunn’s new DC Universe started with the animatedCreature Commandosseries. Its next project will be the biggest challenge the franchise will face in the DCU’s Chapter One.Gunn revealed that there is a lot riding onSuperman. The movie has to be a success, showing that the new DCU’s plans can thrive despite the negative reception of the final films in the DCEU. Gunn has said thatSupermanneeds to be a hit for his vision for the franchise to be realized.
I understand howSmallvilledoes not look important to the studio right now, given how they are focusing on Corenswet’s Superman debut. However, if the movie is the hit that DC and Warner hope it will be, then I’m sure we will be seeing plenty of Corenswet’s version of the Man of Steel in the future. WithSuperman being the first major hero of the new DC Universe, he is bound to be the cornerstone of the franchise. I have a hard time seeing how bringing backSmallvillewould fit into DC’s larger plans, even with the Elseworlds label.

I Don’t Believe Smallville’s Return Is Likely After What Happened To Superman’s Latest Series
One Of The Best Superman Adaptations Ended Before It Should Have
Superman & Loisis one of the best adaptations we have ever had of the Man of Steel and his roster of characters. Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch’s versions of Clark Kent and Lois Lane were true to their iconic comic book selves and had a lot of chemistry. Add that to the fresh perspective of seeing them as the parents of teenagers, with frightening villains and great VFX for The CW, and the show was truly something special.Superman & Loiswas originally meant to last seven seasons, but the show was canceled, ending with season 4.

Speaking withKatee Sackhoff, Tulloch commented on the rumors thatSuperman & Loiswas canceled because DC did not want two competing Supermen. While she did not put the blame entirely on DC Studios co-CEOs Gunn and Peter Safran, Tulloch mentionedthe change of regime at DC as one of the contributing factors. If such a popular Superman series was canceled partly due to DC’s plans for Corenswet’s Clark Kent, I have a hard time thinking that they would greenlight theSmallvillesequel series, as the studio might not want one of Superman’s most popular adaptations to compete with Corenswet’s.
