What This Means For Warfare
The Movie Looks Incredibly Bleak
The man’s face is so covered in dirt and dust that it is hard to tell who it is under these layers of silt. This anonymization is likely intentional, speaking to themes of the all-consuming nature of war that the film will surely cover. Most likely, it is Woon-A-Tai, who is slated to play Mendoza in the film, as it would make the most sense for the protagonist character to appear on the poster. Woon-A-Tai is an Emmy-nominated actor who is best known forplaying Bear inReservation Dogs, so this movie will be an interesting turn for him.
All 4 Alex Garland Movies Ranked From Worst To Best (Including Civil War)
Alex Garland has directed three films so far, each with its own unique style and story. We rank his films - Men, Annihilation, Ex Machina & Civil War.
Even from the poster alone, it seems like the tone of this movie will be incredibly bleak. The poster is the first look audiences have atWarfare, and it sets up a somber character who already looks hardened by the events of the war. The tagline —Everything is based on memory— is also foreboding. These words evoke a theme of PTSDor other traumatic memory issues that may uniquely affect an Iraq war veteran like Mendoza.

Our Take On The Warfare Poster
Alex Garland’s Career Is Taking An Interesting Turn
Warfare’s grim poster shows that Garland is taking his directorial career in a very specific direction. While his filmography has also included sci-fi movies such asEx MachinaandAnnihilation,Civil Warwas a political thriller with broader existential themes that could easily apply to the real world.Warfarewill be an even more personal take on politics and a war situation, but it is definitely not a positive outlook on war. Once theWarfaretrailer releases on Monday, it will be interesting to see just how dark an angle this film is taking.
