The early chapters ofAssassin’s Creed Shadowshave you chasing after a group of masked murderers who stole a precious item from Naoe’s father and disappeared into the fog. Their shadow looms over the introductory sequences, as Naoe recovers from her injuries and reacquaints herself with the shinobi style of combat. Eventually, she builds a hideoutto serve as her home base, and then sets out in search of her father’s murderers and the mysterious box they seized from him in his final moments.
At the beginning, you have two leads: the man with the golden teppo matchlock rifle, and the man with the missing ear. In an introduction toAC Shadows' system of scounts, intelligence, and informants, you must scour the early game areas in order to learn where they may have come from. One ofthe first main questsis “Searching Sakai,” in which you’ll interview a series of gunsmiths throughout Sakai to determine which of them sells guns trimmed with gold. When you eventually find the culprit, you have a series of dialogue options to choose how you deal with him.

How To Find The Gunsmith
Location In Sakai
Before you even have the chance to decide the gunsmith’s ultimate fate, you’ll need to find him in Sakai. There are several gunsmiths in the port district, and you may have to interview several before you find him. For an easy way to locate your next target, hold R3/RS to activate your Eagle Vision, and look for blue dots in the world around you. You may also deploy scouts in the area to get a little more information on his location.
Of course, if you just want to skip ahead to the good part, head to the location marked on the map above to find the gunsmith, whose name is Yakichi, instantly. He’s located just south of the Sakai Kakurega. You’ll have to crouch behind one of the nearby crates and listen to the ensuing conversation (more like an argument) between him and his brother Asajiro before you’re able to move forward with the story. You learn that Asajiro has obtained forged documents, which he intends Yakichi to use to scam some wealth out of a local magnate.

What Happens If You Lie To The Gunsmith?
Pros & Cons Of Stretching The Truth
Eventually, you’ll be prompted to interrupt the gunsmith’s conversation - run forward to begin a dialogue with them. They’ll ask who you are, and you effectively have two options:
The second option hasa little scale icon next to it- this is a running signifier throughout the game to denote certain dialogue choices as lies. Obviously, Naoe has nothing to do with the Imai and is here on her own business.

There are no negative consequences of lying here, but the brothers will ask you a trick question to determine whether you’re for real. Specifically, they’ll inquirewhether you know Imai Sokyu’s son or daughter. As long as you were listening during their conversation, you should know the right answer - they mention Sokyu’s son by name, but there’s no reason to believe he has a daughter. If you choose the wrong option, they’ll know you were lying.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows' Creative Director confirms 30-40 hours for the main campaign, with up to 80 hours for completionists
Ultimately,it’s of little consequence whether you choose to lie to the gunsmith- you’ll come to the same options either way, as long as you answer his trick question correctly. Select whichever option makes the most sense to you and how you prefer to play the game.

What Happens If You Threaten The Gunsmith?
Pros & Cons Of Showing Some Strength
After you’ve proven yourself to them, the brothers will offer to give you the forged contracts for a fee of 500 mon. However, you may also choose the option “You’re wasting my time,” marked with a little storm cloud, to try and threaten themout of their ill-gotten gains.
If you do choose this option,Yakichi and Asajiro will panic, and run in opposite directions. You’ll have to chase down Asajiro through the streets of Sakai, eventually assassinating him and looting the contracts from his body. It’s not difficult to catch up with him; he’s pretty slow, and stops often.

One Game-Changing Mode May Have Saved Assassin’s Creed Shadows For Me
Assassin’s Creed Shadows features a game-changing mode that may have not only fixed its story issues but also changed my opinion of the game.
You’ll get what you need, andthere don’t seem to be any long-term consequencesof this decision. I returned to the gunsmith’s shop in a later season and found it empty; Yakichi was nowhere to be found, obviously frightened by his brother’s death. Nor does the way you obtain the contracts seem to impact your later interactions with the Imai as you continue the main quest ofAssassin’s Creed Shadows.

What Happens If You Bribe The Gunsmith?
Pros & Cons Of Greasing Some Palms
If you instead choose the option that allows you to pay 500 mon, the gunsmith and his brother, as expected, will not accept graciously. They’ll insist that, if you’re so willing to cough up 500 mon, you must have a whole lot more. And since you’re the only one who knows about their forged contracts, they’re better off simply killing you and taking your money now.
Then, you’ll have to fight both brothers at once in a head-on duel. They’re not particularly tough, either - they’re unarmored and clearly untrained - but since Naoe is more balanced for the stealth approach, you’re more likely to encounter difficulty here. Sinceyou can’t freely switch to Yasukeat this point, you’ll be at a slight disadvantage.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Voice Actors On The “Multitudes” Of Naoe & Trophy Hunting Tricks
Assassin’s Creed Shadows actors Miyuri Shimabukuro and Mutsuki Iwanaka talk their in-game roles, trophy hunting, and where the series should go next.
Still, there don’t seem to be any long-term consequences of this choice, either. Imai doesn’t seem to care where you got your contracts, and it’s not like Yakichi and Asajiro will be coming back from the grave to haunt you.

You Should Threaten The Gunsmith
Paradoxically, The Slightly Less Violent Option
Between the two options, choosing to threaten the gunsmith is decidedly the better choice here. It’s a little easier to chase down and assassinate Asajiro than it is to take on both brothers at once, and ultimately, you end up with one fewer dead body than if you chose to try and bribe them.
But none of this seems to matter in the long run, so don’t worry too much about making the wrong choice in “Searching Sakai.” So long as you pay attention to the gunsmith’s conversation and successfully obtain the contracts, you can move on with the main story quest ofAssassin’s Creed Shadowsat your own pace.
