Mr. Shrimp with his son, Chiquitita

Dandadan’s Hilarious Alien Abduction Scene Explained

InDandadanepisode #10, Mr. Shrimp returned and apologized for attacking everyone, explaining that he needed money to buy blood to transfuse into his chronically ill son. While everyone takes pity on Mr. Shrimp, no one has any good ways to help him until Seiko makes a startling discovery: the blood of Mr. Shrimp’s species is virtually identical to milk. From there, Seiko got Mr. Shrimp a cow to take home to his son, and as such,Dandadan’s memetic scene of a UFO abducting a cow is all about Mr. Shrimp using its milk to keep his son healthy.

What makes the scene even better is how much extra life the anime brought to it. In the manga, as hilarious as the imagery was, nothing really happened after it, with Mr. Shrimp’s departure even happening offscreen, but by comparison,Dandadanepisode #10 made the UFO scene even better than the manga by giving Mr. Shrimp’s UFO lively and fluid animation as it gradually flew off into space. That kind of animation has been common inDandadansince the beginning, and it was great to see it at play for such an iconic scene, as well.

It would have been easy for an anime likeScience Saru’sDandadanto have a random alien abduction scene and leave it at that, but with the context of Mr. Shrimp’s backstory,Dandadan’s memetic UFO scene works because it’s supposed to be the heartwarming conclusion to Mr. Shrimp’s struggles as opposed to just being a goofy scene, making it an even stronger scene than it was from the basic meme.
