Baldur’s Gate 3already has hundreds of hours of exclusive scenes andpossible ending combinationsavailable to players, encouraging multiple playthroughs and making the CRPG a game with an impressive shelf life. With the release of Patch 7, developer Larian Studiosreleased a mod toolkit for the game, allowing players to download and manage mods within the game. But one third-party modmay expand the game’s possibilities even further.

Nexus Mods userSiegfreuploaded a new mod that unlocks all the potential features squirreled away in theBaldur’s Gate 3mod toolkit. With this mod, aptly namedBG3Toolkit Unlocked, players will be able to add new maps and campaigns to the game, really opening the possibility for players to build their own campaigns in the CRPG.

The mod’s official description says that it “Unlocks all features and write permissions for the BG3 Toolkitincluding level editing, save editing, and more.“However, the posts about the mod have confirmed that downloading it gives modders a lot of freedom they weren’t previously afforded. Though it’ll require quite a bit of modding skill to pull off, players who are dedicated to extending the lifespan ofBaldur’s Gate 3and its lovable characters even further have the potential to create some custom campaigns through this mod.

The BG3 Modding Toolkit Was Limited In Its Offerings For Modders

Why Were These Tools Locked Away?

The modding toolkit is a similar engine to the one Larian used for theDivinity: Original Singames, which includes a DM mode for modders to use. Because of that, it didn’t take long for modders to realize that the framework for such tools was already available in the kit, thoughthe version released to players with Patch 7 blocked it from being accessed. There’s not a clear explanation for this, though many users suspect that Wizards of the Coast had a large hand in this decision.

Larian has already confirmed that it willnot release dedicated DLCs forBaldur’s Gate 3in the future, nor will it be thestudio that develops a possibleBaldur’s Gate 4. The modding toolkit is likely to expand the game’s already long shelf life, thoughthe exclusion of a DM mode is speculated to be a decision made by Wizards of the Coast to prevent players from having too much control over new content in the game.

The company has other video game projects in the works, including one fromDisney Dreamlight Valleydeveloper Gameloft, and allowing players to create custom campaigns inBadlur’s Gate 3wouldlikely deter possible new players for its other projects. AsBG3licensed the use ofDungeons & DragonsIP from Wizards of the Coast, the company likely wanted to limit potential new scenes and campaigns created by fans to retain more control over possible future expansions to the game and the characters created for it.

ThoughBaldur’s Gate 3easily has more than 1,000 hours of playtime built into the base title, those who have already worked through much of the game’s content since its release more than a year ago are itching for new storylines and adventures to take their illithid tadpole-infected characters through. The new modding tools will give players plenty of opportunities to add new content, butthose looking to add scenes and maps to the well-loved CRPG can now do so with this mod.
