Who Are the Court of Owls? Gotham’s Villainous Secret Cabal, Explained

There are tons of secret societies in the DC Comics world and one of the most popular and famous is Gotham’s Court of Owls. But who are they really?

By Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo

TheCourt of Owls are one of Batman’smost dangerous enemies, as they control nearly every aspect of Gotham, from the political to the financial. The real reason Batman can never truly improve the quality of life in Gotham City is because the Court of Owls are constantly working to make the city worse than ever. Fighting the Court directly is also difficult, because not only are their leaders shrouded in shadow and mystery, but their enforcers are nearly indestructible assassins, which is exactly why Batman needs a specialized suit to take the Court of Owls down once and for all.

Batman is one of the most popular characters to cosplay because he simply hassomany interesting looks from over the years.

The idea of Batman usinga specialized suit against the Court of Owlsisn’t new. In the story “Twenty-Seven” fromDetective Comics#27, readers see several versions of Batman over the years. Each Batman is more futuristic than the last, and one of them employs agiant mech suit to battle the Court of Owls, who seem to have upgraded as well. Batman and the Court’s mecha battle all across Gotham City, and it’s easy to imagine that this escalation first began when Batman created his very first anti-Owl suit, such as the Thrasher that was perfectly cosplayed here.
