While Capcom has been making plenty of official announcements, including a remake ofOnimusha 2: Samurai’s Destinyand updates onMonster Hunter Wilds, a potential leak indicates that a remake of the firstDevil May Crymight also be in the works. Originally released in 2001,Devil May Cryis largely considered to have created the hack and slash, or “character action” genre, going on to influence the development of franchises likeGod of WarandBayonetta, the latter of which was a later work ofDMC’s director, Hideki Kamiya.
A recent post by RedditorMXHombre123indicates thata remake ofDevil May Cry, along the same lines as theResident Evilremakes, might be in development at Capcom, citing an anonymous post where the poster refers to information from an unknown “game journalist” acquaintance. While this might not be substantial on the surface, this information was also posted by Reddit userIcePopsicleDragonaround the same time, with both sources saying that theDevil May Cryinfo was paired with a leak that EA’sNeed for Speedfranchise would also receive news - which it recently did.

Devil May Cry Remake Could Be In The Works, Sources Claim
An Unverified Leak Points To A Remake Of The Original Devil May Cry
According to the leaks, the prospectiveDevil May Cryremake would include “Better Graphics”, a “Reworked story”, and a “different camera angle”. News of the leak has also been paired with a statement from the voice actor for series antagonist Vergil, Daniel Southworth. Southworth said that he had “just finished a video game” at a Power Morphicon 2024 panel, as can be seen in a video posted by YouTuberJason Naranjo, which fans have taken as soft confirmation of a newDevil May Crygame in the works.
FF16’s Combat Proves It’s Time For Another Capcom Remake
As the upcoming Final Fantasy 16 commits fully to flashy action combat, it may be time for one of Capcom’s classic franchises to be remade.
With Capcom seemingly focusing most of its efforts on theupcoming release ofMonster Hunter Wilds, any official news onDevil May Crywill likely not be released until afterWildslaunches on February 28- and, in fact, might be planned to roughly coincide with the release of theNetflixDevil May Cryseries in April. Notably, Hideki Kamiya, at the newly-established studio Clovers, is already working with Capcom on anOkamisequel, lending more support to the likelihood of aDMCremake, but before any official confirmation, the leaks should still be taken with a grain of salt.

What Makes Devil May Cry Such A Successful Franchise?
Devil May Cry Is The Original Hack & Slash Game
WhileDevil May Cryisn’t Capcom’s most popular and successful franchise (generally lagging behindResident Eviland especiallyMonster Hunter) it is a hugely influential one, havingessentially created and greatly refined the “character action” genre with the originalDevil May Cryand the laterDevil May Cry 3.Devil May Cry 3and5, in particular, are both regarded by fans as two of the best games in the entire genre, and which game isthebest between them largely boils down to personal preference.
Capcom is Interested In Bringing Back Old IPs
Capcom is interested in making more games based on old IP after the success of remakes and sequels and Resident Evil 2 and Monster Hunter World.
In spite of this, though,Devil May Cryas a whole is somewhat of a mixed bag -DMC2, for example, is largely regarded as a complete disaster, and whileDMC4isn’t nearly as bad, it’s still heavily flawed, and led to an attempted (and controversial) reboot of the series in 2013 withNinja Theory’sDmC: Devil May Cry. The originalDevil May Cry, while well-regarded, is showing its age in several places - so, if the leaks are true, a remake of the game would be welcome news for most fans.
