DC Studios looks to bring another Batman villain to life, as one of the Dark Knight’s most famousDCbaddies is getting their own solo movie. While the DC Universe has just begun with Max’sCreature Commandos, DC Studios has more projects on the way for the big and small screens. Following James Gunn’s recent tease thatanother DC projecthad just been greenlit, many have been speculating as to what that could be, and a recent development may finally shed light on the co-CEO’s latest comments.
In a new report fromVariety, the trade reveals thata live-actionClayfacemovie is in development with Mike Flanagan attached as the screenwriter. While Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios have yet to confirm it,Varietynotes thatClayfaceis aiming to start filming in early 2025. At the time of this story’s publication, it’s unclear whetherClayfaceis attached to Gunn’s DC Universe or will be part of DC Studios' Elseworlds banner.

What Mike Flanagan’s Clayface Movie Means For DC Studios
Clayface Could Go Several Different Ways
The new DC Studios report shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, as Flanagan making aClayfacemovie is something the filmmaker himself teased in August during aScreen Rant-hosted panel at Fan Expo Canada. The latest development also comes over a year after it was first revealed that Flanagan had pitched aClayfacefilm to DC Studios, which never got confirmed or denied at the time.It does not seem likely that Flanagan will direct, asVarietynotes he has several other commitments. It is said a director announcement is “imminent.”
Flanagan is working ona newExorcistfilm and adaptations of Stephen King’sCarrieandThe Dark Tower.

The biggest question, however, is where DC Studios is placing theClayfacefilm, asthey have multiple options for the project in terms of both character and continuity. While the DCU has Alan Tudyk voicing the character inCreature Commandos, it’s possible theClayfaceproject could be an Elseworlds title, and therefore not set in Matt Reeves’The Batmanuniverse; his involvement was not mentioned in the trade’s report. Withthe DCU’sThe Brave and The Boldmoviein development,Clayfacecould always be set in Gunn’s franchise and allow the villain to be further fleshed out before eventually dealing with that universe’s Batman.
Our Take On Mike Flanagan’s Clayface Movie Report
While time will tell if Gunn will clarify whereClayfacefits into DC Studios' current plans,it is incredibly exciting to see the iconic Batman foe get his time to shinein live-action, especially with someone like Flanagan attached to the project. With the horror aspect that comes with Clayface in the DC canon, Flanagan’s movie has a chance to really stand out in the superhero and comic book movie genre. Should filming truly take place in 2025,Clayfacewill likely start casting and looking for a director sooner rather than later.

Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
