Dan Da Dan, one of Shonen Jump’s best and most unique manga in recent years, is finally being adapted, and the anime is almost here. There is a lot of hype surrounding this series, especially given the insane marketing it received and how popular the source material is, and anime fans simply aren’t ready for this crazy journey.
Written and illustrated by Yukinobu Tatsu and serialized in Shonen Jump+,Dan Da Danrevolves aroundMomo Ayase and Ken Takakura, aka Okarun, two high-school students who have a chance encounter and find out that the former believes in ghosts while the latter believes in aliens. To find out who is right, both go to separate locations for a challenge and as it turns out, they’re both correct. Thus starts their wacky and insane journey as they fight against ghosts and aliens, and their relationship blooms as they face danger together.

The first episode will introduce the two main characters, Momo Ayase and Okarun (Ken Takakura), and how the two met when Momo stood up for Okarun when he was being bullied as he was reading an occult magazine. After she leaves, Okarun follows her and talks to her about his interest in aliens and UFOs, creeping out Momo. The two get into an argument after Momo reveals she believes in ghosts instead of aliens, and they decide that whoever can prove the existence of their belief, the loser would be the other’s servant.

Dandadan: First Encounter gives people an early preview of Dandadan in theaters, and it’s an excellent start to one of the best anime of the year.
Okarun goes to a tunnel to look for ghosts and Momo to an abandoned building to look for aliens, each trying to prove the other wrong. Incidentally, both ghosts and aliens exist, and they are both ambushed by these creatures.Okarun is possessed by Turbo Grannyand Momo is abducted by aliens, and after much struggle, they manage to save each other. However, Okarun is still cursed and can lose control at any time, while Momo unlocked paranormal abilities. The two then work on lifting the curse on Okarun, and as they spend time together, their relationship grows, and love blooms.
Dan Da Dan Has Received an Unreal Promotion
WhileKaiju No. 8received incredible marketing earlier this year,Dan Da Dan’s marketing team took it up a notch by promoting the anime incredibly well. Not only did the anime receive an international theatrical run by GKIDS, but it also collaborated with Ghostbusters, a perfect collaboration given the nature of the series. The fact that the series is also being streamed on Netflix, Hulu and Crunchyroll, three of the biggest anime platforms, shows just how much potential this series has and how big it can be.
This is very deserved considering how fun and interesting the series is. The production is also on point, as Science SARU nailed it by making the anime colorful and vibrant, replicating the vibe of the source material. CREEPY NUTS, the band behind one of this year’s biggest anime songs, will also be in charge of the anime’s opening theme.
The First Few Episodes Might Be A Turn-Off For Many
Dan Da Dan Has A Very Odd Premise That Isn’t For Everyone
While there is a lot of hype behindDan Da Dan, some scenes that depict sexual assault or the many references to genitals might be a huge turn-off for many. This is understandable since the series' sense of humor is unique and might not appeal to everyone, but anyone who decides to stick with it and give it a proper chance will be rewarded with incredible characters and action that couldDan Da Dana competitor for anime of the year.
