Summary
Dark Matterhas been officially renewed. The Apple TV+ show, which was created by Blake Crouch, is based on Crouch’s science fiction novel of the same name, which was published in 2016. It stars Joel Edgerton as physicist Jason Dessen, who is kidnapped into an alternate reality by a different version of himself. The cast of the show also includes Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, and Oakes Fegley. Because the show is based on a self-contained novel,Dark Matterseason 2was not always a guarantee.
Apple TV+has announced thatthey have renewedDark Matterseason 2. This news comes less than two months after the season 1 finale on June 26.Blake Crouchhas also confirmed the renewal on his official X account. Check out his post below:

The post includes an edited photo of Edgerton at a whiteboard reading “Dark Matter season two,” with a caption that reads “We left some unfinished business at the end of Season One…” Crouch also shared a statement where he teased that “we’ve only scratched the surface of these characters”, which can be read in full below:
Thanks to everyone who tuned-in for season one—book fans and new fans—and of course our partners at Apple and Sony, my amazing producing partner, Matt Tolmach, our tremendous cast and crew, and the great city of Chicago—you were so good to us. In the process of writing and filming season one, we discovered that there’s so much more story to tell, and we’ve only scratched the surface of these characters as they fight for survival and to find their way home through a landscape of mind-bending realities. See you in the Box!
When Will Dark Matter Season 2 Premiere?
New Episodes Of The Apple TV+ Show Could Take Quite A While
Although the show is continuing, it will still likely be quite some time before new episodes can follow up on the propulsiveDark Matterseason 1 ending. Adding this roughly two-month delay could lead to a long hiatus, as the show requires an extensive production and post-production process. While season 2 might not take quite so long to produce for a variety of reasons, principal photography for season 1 began in October 2022, meaningthere was a gap of roughly 19 months between the show’s production kickoff and its premiereon Apple TV+ in May 2024.
While it has not yet been officially announced which stars will be returning, it seems likely that both Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly will be invited to reprise their original roles.
Even if season 2 were to begin shooting before the end of the year, production could still potentially take nearly as long as season 1, which was roughly five months. The timeline of the new season also depends on the availability of theDark Mattercast. While it has not yet been officially announced which stars will be returning, it seems likely that both Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly will be invited to reprise their original roles. The in-demand actors' schedules could potentially affect the start date of the season, pushing it into early or mid-2025.
One of Joel Edgerton’s upcoming projects is the movieTrain Dreams, in which he stars opposite Felicity Jones.
Should that be the case, it is entirely possible thatDark Matterseason 2 will not premiere until some time between late 2026 and mid-2027. That hiatus isn’t entirely unusual for an Apple TV+ science fiction series sinceSeveranceseason 2 is expected in early 2025 after season 1 of the popular series premiered in February 2022.
