In 2023, Discotek Media announced to the surprise of many that for the first time, the three films that made upDigimon: The Movie—Digimon Adventure,Our War Game, andHurricane Touchdown—would be released outside Japan with most of the English cast reprising their roles. The announcement appealed to both nostalgicDigimonfans and ones who wanted a more serious dub, and it was met with plenty of fanfare, accordingly.
The new dub of the first threeDigimonfilms, combined with a rerelease ofDigimon: The Movie, has been one of the most hotly-anticipatedDigimonreleases in years, and there’s finally a confirmed release date. Recently, Discotek Media announced new releases for the fall and winter, and it was announced thatthe Blu-ray rerelease ofDigimon: The Movieand the dub ofthe first threeDigimonfilms would be released on July 04, 2025.

Everything promised in the rerelease makes it incredibly exciting, and finally having a confirmed release date for it is great to see.
Why The Rerelease Of The Digimon Movies Is So Exciting
Digimon Fans Get The Most Exciting Release In Years
One of the reasons whyDigimon: The Moviehas such a divisive reputation is that not only was the script incredibly awkward and cheesy, even for 2000s anime, but for clumsily trying to make three unrelated films work in a single narrative, withHurricane Touchdown’s story being completely rewritten to make it happen. As such,Discotek Media is finally giving people a legal means of watching the first threeDigimonfilms with their original stories intact, and with most of the original English cast coming back for it, it’s sure to deliver on all accounts.
That being said,Digimon: The Moviebeing rereleased is still plenty exciting, as well. As poorly constructed a film as it might be, for a lot of people,Digimon: The Movieworks specifically because of how much it leans into cheesy and awkward dialogue with occasional moments of heart, complete with plenty of jokes and licensed music that works specifically because of how unfitting they are. People have found plenty of reasons to like it despite its many faults, and as such, it getting a high-quality rerelease is great for anyone who grew up with the film.

Another reason whyDigimon: The Movie’s rerelease is so exciting is because of what it could mean for theDigimonfranchise, as a whole. TheDigimonfilms have an infamously poor history with physical and digital releases, with the vast majority of them being lost media in the West, soDigimon: The Movie’s rerelease being a success could lead toall the otherDigimonmovies finally being released outside Japan. That’s all hypothetical, of course, but it would do a lot to help the franchise grow in the West, so it would be great to see.
Another point to consider is the prospect of redubbing the films. The original films forDigimon Adventure 02,Digimon Tamers, andDigimon Frontierhad their scripts heavily altered to be more kid-friendly with simplified dialogue and an overabundance of jokes, so if people take to the redubs of the first threeDigimonfilms, thenthe potential success of the redubbing of the originalDigimonfilms could lead to later films being redubbedwith more accurate scripts. These factors and others makeDigimon: The Movie’s rerelease all the more exciting, and there’s even more to look forward to, come December 2024.
