Finding and unlocking every pet inAssassin’s Creed Shadowsin a noble goal, but you will need to traverse a large part of the map to do it. There are a lot of options, and even more than it appears at first glance. Once you unlock a pet, you’re able to place it in your Hideout so that you can pet it whenever you want. It’s a great perk and one of the great things you can do that is different in this game than in past ones.
There are others, but this is thebest change inAssassin’s Creed Shadowsfrom its predecessors, in my opinion. I also like the improvements to the stealth mechanics, but very little beats being able to have your own menagerie of creatures living with you. Once you unlock them, your Hideout will become a haven for not just cats and dogs but other more exotic pets as well.

How Animals Work In AC Shadows & How To Collect Them
Unlocking Pets As Cosmetic Items & What They Do
It is fairly straightforward to unlock the animals, but you do have to find them first. At the simplest level, you just have to walk up to an animal and pet it, and it will get added to your collection. However, this is not always the case, and what works for one pet may not work for another. There are myriad ways to collect the animals, and I have been searching high and low for different kinds of animals.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Main Story Quest Walkthrough
Like most RPGs, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is divided up into quests. Here’s how to complete each one of them, with additional resources for some.
After they have been collected, you can return to yourHideout inAssassin’s Creed Shadowsand go to the edit Hideout table in the main building. Choose to build andthen go all the way through the menu to get to the last section. There, you will be able to view all the pets you’ve unlocked, and you can place them. You are not limited by type in that you can technically have a large family of macaques if you want- although legendary animals are limited to just one.
To clarify, this guide will list all the animals that have been found that can be pets at the current time. However, due to the nature of exploration in this game,it’s entirely possible there are more that have been missed, and this guide will be updated if more are found.
However, you can only have a maximum of 30 pets total in the Hideout, so you can place only one kind of pet, if you want, but only up to 30 of them. It’s a bit of a shame as there are a lot of different pets to unlock, but I understand that would likely slow down the game quite a bit.
Where To Find Your Pets
Dogs & Cats
Dogs and cats make up a fair chunk of the pets you’re able to find inAssassin’s Creed Shadows. It is not entirely clear how many varieties there are that you can unlock - some have reported a couple that others have not seen. However, there are a fair amount that are guaranteed.
For dogs, there are six variants that you can stumble across in most towns and cities, and they often appear at shrinesas well:
It isnot entirely clear if this is completely randomor if there are variants that appear no matter what at certain places. I know for me it felt fairly random, as the first time I visited Sakai there were only Golden Akitas, but later I went back and found almost every variant running around. However, these aren’t the only dogs you can find.
There is also a side quest that was pre-order only called"Thrown to the Dogs"which will give you the unique pet named Tsuki-maru, of which you can only place one in your Hideout. It can be found just east of Osaka and Sakai near the Kofun in the region. You will have to walk up the hill to find the dog,but it should be marked on your map and your objectives listas soon as you complete the prologue and open the map.
I have seen people say there are other side quests that give you unique animals, but I have yet to find one. There are 5 legendary sumi-e paintings, but none of them actually give you the animal as a pet.
For cats, the solution is a little easier. You can go to theOmi Cat Island (Okishima)shown in the images above and unlock all the cat variants by petting them. You don’t really need to be a high level, as there are not usually enemies on the island. So go ahead and take the long trip to unlock the cats you don’t have yet. However, you can also unlock them just by petting them in any other town.
I have looked for a Tabby kitten nearly everywhere I’ve gone, but I have yet to see one. There may also be rarer variants, such as spotted or white, but the jury seems to be outas to whether they actually get added to your collection or not.
Sumi-e Painting Pet Unlocks
Most famously, you can get amacaque monkey for your Hideout inAssassin’s Creed Shadows, but that is not the only pet unlocked by completing Sumi-e challenges.
You can also get a tanuki pup by petting Mikan’s cubs during Junjiro’s quest line.
I would note that this list may not be complete, as I have found new random painting spots that I haven’t seen listed anywhere else. However, I have tracked down as many as possible for you.
Shika Deer and Fawn
Red Fox pup
While these all have a seasonal requirement,I would take the seasonal requirements with a grain of salt. The seasons do change, but I have found some of these outside of the seasons that are listed. For instance, I thought it was summer when I found the macaques, but it was actually spring. Additionally, the Yokai are said to have a seasonal requirement, but I have found them all at any given season.
Vendor Unlocks
There aresome animals that can only be found through ornamental vendors so far. These can be found in nearly every town and city, and their inventory changes seasonally and, as best we can tell, randomly. Some of these, such as the Pheasant, can also be found randomly in loot boxesin places like Castles as an uncommon cosmetic.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: All Godai Shinobi Locations & Rewards
Although there are only 5 Godai Shinobi locations to find, they’ll put up a fight when you attempt to assassinate them in AC Shadows.
Because it is random, you will have to be diligent to grab them all, but you can find them over time. Just verify to stop by vendors when you see them.
This might not be all of them since it is random, but these are all ones that have been reported and that I have seen so far.
Other Possible Methods
You can also get four pets from the Helix store that are seasonally based. The whole pack costs 800 Helix credits, but you can also purchase them each separately for 250. The four seasonal pets are:
There is also aSakura Foxthat occasionally makes an appearance in the Daily Exchange. Sometimes this can be free, other times you will have to trade keys for it. You can also purchase it directly from the store for 200 Helix Credits. And that is all the animals that can become pets that are known at the current time inAssassin’s Creed Shadows.
