The legacy ofFallout: New Vegasseems to only grow with every passing year, and the new fan gameFallout: Méxicocould be one of the most exciting upcoming releases for fans ofNew Vegas.Although the bugs that riddledNew Vegasat launch hampered its reputation for a while, it’s now a common pick for the bestFalloutgame, and plenty of fans would rather see a new game in its vein than another experience likeFallout 4.At any rate, another officialFalloutgame isn’t likely to arrive for years, so fan projects have taken up the mantle.

An official trailer forFallout: México, available onYouTube, revealed aFallout: New Vegasmod that appears strikingly ambitious and already impressive in its unfinished form. True to its name,Fallout: Méxicotakes things south of the border, focusing on the once-vibrant metropolis of Mexico City.

The trailer highlights a variety of environments, from desolate city streets to the metro trundling on through a dark subway beneath. Near the end of the voice-over, the narrator reveals that they’re running a cartel, the kind of mercenary act that they deem necessary for survival in a harsh, post-apocalyptic world. Although the trailer’s title calls the modFallout: México, the logo at the end displays the name asFallout: Nuevo México, so both names seem to be more or less official.

A Standalone Experience In Its Own Right

Fallout: New Vegashas long had an active modding scene, butFallout: Méxicolooks like it’s operating on a much grander scale than usual. With an emphasis on a cultural disconnect from theU.S. setting of the officialFalloutgames, a mention of interlopers in “shiny armor” implies thatthe factions found in Mexico City won’t be the same ones that everyone is used to.

Fallout: London’s New Lore Opens Up Exciting Possibilities, But There’s A Catch

Fallout 4 mod, Fallout: London, offers players insight into the post-war UK, providing context and lore that many wish for the rest of the world.

While people who have spent the last 14 years doing everything there is to do inNew Vegasmight not have much reason to return for the average mod, visiting an entirely new city with its own story and culture could help bring fans back into the fold andintroduce new players toFallout: New Vegasfor the first time. As a fan project,Fallout: Méxicowill still be free despite its scale, so there likely won’t be much reason for anyone interested to avoid checking it out.

Our Take: How Mods Like These Make Pre-Existing Titles Better

Transformation

There’s no denying that mods can be messes, and the buggyrelease of theFallout 4modFallout: Londonthis year was the perfect example of those problems. Even so, getting to see takes on the world outside the U.S. is an exciting prospect that Bethesda isn’t going to officially indulge, andFallout: Londonmore than delivered on that fundamental promise. With any luck,Fallout: Méxicocould achieve similar heights, ideally with a more stable release to boot, and getting a new experience built on the bones ofFallout: New Vegascould be a real treat.
