What This Means For Frankenstein
The Length of The Release Window Is Unclear
The confusion aboutFrankenstein’s theatrical run is justified by the fact that Netflix is producing the movie. Whilethe streamer studio has done theatrical runs before with films such asGlass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Netflix films are most often released directly to the platform.Del Toro’s previous project with Netflix,Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchiowas given a very limited release in theaters in 2022 before hitting Netflix a month later. This release strategy was likely made to accommodate the release requirement for Oscars eligibility.

In his innovative version of Pinocchio’s story, Guillermo Del Toro offers a new perspective on iconic characters such as Gepetto and Cricket.
Given the distinct visual language revealed even inFrankenstein’s first image, it is likely that the film would seek a theatrical release for awards eligibility. The film would be an easy target for technical awards at a minimum, if not more. Del Toro did not specify the nature of the release in his announcement, only saying thatFrankensteinwill get a theatrical release. Given the familiarity of the story and the popularity of del Toro, however,Frankensteinwould have the potential to do well in theaters.Hopefully, this would mean a longer distribution window for the horror tale.

Our Take On Frankenstein’s Theatrical Release
Frankenstein’s Theatrical Release Potential Is Exciting
Del Toro’s moviesare works that deserve to be seen on the big screen. The director has been slighted by the misfortune of the COVID-19 pandemic and a streaming-focused release for his past two films. As a result, it would be great ifFrankensteincould get a full theatrical release closer to that of the Oscar-winningThe Shape of Waterthan an awards-eligibility release likeNightmare AlleyorPinocchio. Del Toro is respected enough as an auteur that Netflix might be willing to break its streaming-heavy strategy to giveFrankensteinlonger theatrical exclusivity.
