Rebel Ridgedirector Jeremy Saulnier teases his next movie, comparing it to his violent 2015 horror movie starring Patrick Stewart. Hitting Netflix this past weekend,Rebel Ridgestars Aaron Pierreas an ex-Marine who faces off against a small town police department while attempting to post bail for his cousin. Reviews for the action thriller have been glowing from critics, leading to questions regarding what Saulnier, who is also well known for movies likeGreen Room(2015) andBlue Ruin(2013) will do next.

In a recent interview withThe Playlist, Saulnier is asked what he’ll be tackling afterRebel Ridge, revealing that his next movie will be more in line withGreen Room. The filmmaker says the project “is in the Green Room universe,“though it’s unclear if he means a literal extension of that film’s story or more of a spiritual and tonal successor. He does reveal, however, that audiences can expect a Halloween setting for the action. Check out his comment below:

“I’m currently writing something that’s a little more in the Green Room universe. Because with Rebel Ridge, I was exploring a new side. I was just tired of everything I do being oppressive. But I’ve kinda gone back. It has to do with music and Halloween and fun sh-t.”

What Saulnier’s Update Means For His Rebel Ridge Follow-Up

How His Next Film Will Be Different

Given the fairly conclusive ending ofGreen Room(and the tragic real-life passing of star Anton Yelchin in 2016), it’s likely thatSaulnier’s most recent comment about his next movie is about tone, and not the creation of a literalGreen Roomfranchise or cinematic universe. WhileRebel Ridgeis a tense action thrillerwith similarities to 1982’sFirst Blood, his 2015 movie leans more into horror. The film follows a punk rock band who find themselves under siege in a neo-Nazi dive bar after witnessing a murder, and there’s plenty of violence, claustrophobia, and shocking moments.

Rebel Ridge Ending Explained

Green Roomcurrently sports an impressive 90% critics' score onRotten Tomatoes, and the audience score, now called the Popcornmeter, is also respectable at 75%. While the film operates firmly inside the horror-thriller genre,it was widely praised for its inventive use of space and the thrills that come from a relatively straightforward but chilling premise.Green Roomalso features a somewhat surprising casting choice, with Patrick Stewart playing Darcy, the leader of a neo-Nazi gang.

Our Take On Saulnier’s Next Movie Being More Like Green Room

Why The Rebel Ridge Follow-Up Is One To Watch Out For

WithBlue Ruin,Green Room, andRebel Ridge, Saulnier has cemented himself as one of the most exciting directors working today. Though his 2018 movie,Hold the Dark, earned more middling reviews and was arguably not as successful, Saulnier clearly knows how to tell gripping, contained stories. Now almost 10 years removed fromGreen Room, it will be exciting to see Saulnier go back to those roots.

Saulnier doesn’t clarify, but it’s likely that his next movie will also land at Netflix given bothHold the DarkandRebel Ridgeare original movies for the streamer. While this certainly will make the movie easier for the average viewer to watch, watchingGreen Roomin a packed theater is arguably the superior experience. With writing on hisRebel Ridgefollow-up still ongoing, it may be some time before that film comes together, but it’s evidently one to look forward to.
