Summary
It was previously unknown how the lady of Woodstone Mansion died inGhosts, but Hetty Woodstone revealed her cause of death near the end of season 3. Rebecca Wisocky portrays a high-status spirit, a former robber baron, and a distant ancestor of Rose McIver’s Sam character. As the only ghost who inhabited and owned Woodstone Mansion while living, Hetty acts like she has it all together. Still, season 3 forced Hetty to reveal her dark past to her cohort of paranormal friends. As such, Hetty’s death explains one of the last unknown pieces ofthe ghosts' backstories.
As a woman who typically projected strength in both life and death,it took a tragic incident for Hetty to reveal her most profound vulnerability– how she died. The reveal came as the second-biggest news the baron had ever shared. InGhostsseason 2, Hetty reveals that her son, Thomas Woodstone, murdered Alberta. While all the deaths at Woodstone Mansion have a morbid twist, Hetty’s stands out. The lady of the house’s death ties directly back to the story and sets her character up forGhostsseason 4.

Ghosts: What Happened To Flower In Season 3 Explained
Ghosts features an ensemble of human and spirit characters and one of the most notable is Flower, who ends up leaving the show in season 3.
Hetty Took Her Own Life In Ghosts
Hetty Died Of Strangulation
Of allthe ghosts in the CBS series,Ghostssaved Hetty’s death as one of the last revealed. After Flower fell into a well inGhostsseason 3 and could not get out, ultimately putting her in grave danger, Hetty stepped up to save the day. By doing so, Hetty had to reveal a dark secret about her past. After Hetty’s husband, Elias, went missing after doing illegal business and leaving her hands dirty with his crimes,Hetty barricaded herself in the library and strangled herself with a telephone cord from the wall as the police surrounded Woodstone Mansion.
Hetty and her husband Elias' crimes involved skirting child labor laws.

Hetty knew that if the law tried her for her crimes, her son, Thomas, would lose everything. Hetty took her own life so that Thomas could continue to live on the Woodstone family’s robber baron fortune. While she had the best intentions and was acting under tremendous stress,Hetty revealed that she ultimately regretted the decision to strangle herself. Hetty told Isaac and Sam she intended to protect her son by saving his fortune. However, Hetty realized she had failed him by robbing him of his mother.
How Hetty’s Death Compares To Other Spirits In Ghosts
Hetty’s Ghosts Death Is The Most Devastating
Hetty’s death is one of the show’s most tragic. Whileeach spirit inGhostshas a morbid story about how they were left stranded on the propertyforever, Hetty’s is undeniably sad. Many other ghosts died and remained stranded on the property due to comedic and bizarre circumstances. For instance, Flower’s character died trying to hug a bear, and Isaac Higgintoot died of dysentery – made funnier by the character’s constant disregard for sanitary procedures and clean drinking water. Instead, Hetty chose to take her own life in her own home.
How Sasappis died inGhostsis still a mystery.
Some deaths are less comedic, like how Thor was struck by lightning after being abandoned, or how Alberta was murdered by her bootlegger boyfriend’s lover. Still, Hetty’s has, at least now, the most devastating fate. Hetty’s death is made worse by the fact that she felt she was alone and didn’t have anyone. That said,Ghostssure knows how to balance the yin and yang of its narrative. Hetty’s ghost has had a fling with Trevor, the least serious ghost of the series who died without his pants on, to balance out the baron’s unfortunate fate.
