SPOILERS ahead for Ghosts season 4, episodes 8 and 9, “A Very Arondekar Christmas"TheGhostsChristmas episode proves thatthe series can use Utkarsh Ambudkar’s character better, even if Jay’s big season 4 twist led to disappointing conclusions. Ahead ofGhostsseason 4, the series announced that Jay would be able to see theghosts of Woodstone Mansion, whereas only his wife could previously interact with the ghosts and spirits. The big announcement left us wondering howGhostswould pull off Jay’s big twist and whether his spirit vision would be permanent. Ultimately,Jay sees the spirits inGhostsseason 4in the action-packed Christmas episode.

As Sam and Jay prepared for the arrival of Jay’s parents, Mahesh and Champa Arondekar, the couple accidentally electrocuted themselves while fixing the water heater. Sam and Jay each fell backward into a spirit, leading to a double possession, where the wife and husband possessed Nancy and Pete, respectively. Things got all the more interesting when Jay, trying to expel Pete from his body, ended up as a ghost. The mishap allowed Jay to interact with the ghosts, but his ability was short-lived. Still,Ghostsseason 4’s holiday outing has a moment that proves the series can use Jay better.

Sam’s Conversation With Champa Highlights How Ghosts Can Better Utilize Jay

Nancy Makes A Profound Revelation

Sam and Jay’s untimely circumstances forced the couple to host Jay’s family while possessed. While Nancy possesses Sam, the ghost uses the experience to her full advantage, using her human form to indulge in activities like eating guacamole with her bare hands. Jay’s mom, Champa, walks in on the experience, asking her son to help his father with the Wi-Fi and suggesting she use the time to bond with Sam. While Jay hesitates, Champa insists on her efforts, which leaves Nancy alone with Sam’s mother-in-law. Nancy’s odd behavior (as Sam) overshadows their conversation, but coincidentally, endears Champa to her daughter-in-law.

Champa is impressed with Nancy’s comment, calling it profound, because Nancy has unknowingly tapped into a core aspect of Hinduism: reincarnation.

One moment stands out between the pair: when Champa makes Chai tea. Nancy drinks it too fast, remarking she has burnt her throat, but ultimately shrugging and saying,“Whatever, this body’s just a rental.“Champa is impressed with Nancy’s comment, calling it profound, because Nancy has unknowingly tapped into a core aspect of Hinduism: reincarnation. The concept of reincarnation, the constant cycle of death and rebirth between lives, aligns with Nancy’s commentthat the body is"just a rental.“The moment between Sam and Champa is a reminder of Jay’s Hindu background, which came up inGhostsseason 3.

Jay Can Still Have A Bigger Role

In the season 3 premiere, Jay shared the concept of reincarnation with the ghosts regardingwhat happened to Flower inGhostsseason 3. The premiere began with Sam and the spirits frantically searching the house for the hippie, following the revelation that someone had been “sucked off.“To console the Viking, Jay tells Thor about reincarnation, saying that in Hinduism, they are taught that a spirit finds a new home in a different body when a person dies. While initially resisting the idea, Thor eventually gravitates to the notion, believing that Flower has reincarnated into a barn owl.

CBS Ghosts Fixed The UK Version’s Harmful Trope (& It’s One Of Its Best Stories)

Ghosts fixed an element of the original British Ghosts series, which inspires the American sitcom, including all its best spirit characters.

Jay’s perspective added an engaging narrative toGhostsseason 3. The series should utilize his perspective more often, and not just to set up a punchline like Thor believing his girlfriend is an owl. While his beliefs are far from universal, Jay’s Hindu background includes profound revelations about life and death, and they perfectly blend into a sitcom narrative that revolves around what happens when a person dies. Even if Jay can’t see the spirits after the Christmas episode,Ghostsseason 4 can still utilize Jay’s exposure to Hinduism to factor him into more conversations.
