AlthoughGhostsseason 4’s Halloween special was already packed with exciting incidents, the episode’s ending still left the door open for even more new characters in upcoming episodes. WhileGhostsseason 4’s cast of charactersincluded Mary Holland’s Patience in its first few outings, viewers hopefully didn’t get too attached to this newcomer. The pious Puritan was saved from “Thedirt” where she was trapped under the house in the season 4 premiere, but she struggled to acclimate to life in the Woodstone Mansion. This came to a head withGhostsseason 4’s Frank visit.

7 Clues & Easter Eggs In Ghosts Season 4’s New Opening Video
Ghosts season 4 might have a brief opening title card, but it is full of major hints at the hit sitcom’s upcoming storylines and plot twists.
Sam was desperate for her reunion with her estranged father to go well, but Patience was horrified to hear of Frank and his new girlfriend sharing a bed before marriage. She made the walls bleed, forcing Sam and Jay to come up with elaborate excuses to reassure Frank and his girlfriend. Although Sam did eventually reconcile with Frank, season 4, episode 3, “Halloween IV: The Witch” proved thatGhostsseason 4’s new character Patiencewas still no closer to fitting in at the mansion. This results in a shocking last-minute twist that hints at further new characters.

Why Patience Decides To Go Back Into The Dirt In Ghosts Season 4, Episode 4
The Realities Of Modern Life Were Too Much For The Pious Puritan
When Patience initially demanded that the ghosts hold a trial to determine whether Sam was a witch or not, the group played along since they were annoyed at Sam and Jay for canceling Halloween. When the group decided Sam must be a witch, it seemed as though Patience somehow turned Sam into a stone statue as punishment. After a dramatic rescue of this statue, which Jay accidentally sold to an online explosive enthusiast, it was revealed that Patience never turned Sam to stone at all. Patience also shamefacedly admitted that she watched TV alongside Isaac, despite considering entertainment a mortal sin.
Eventually,Patience announced she was returning to “The dirt” since the sins of the above-ground world were too much for her Puritan values, and the rest of the mansion’s residents made no attempts to stop her. AlthoughIsaac’sGhostsseason 4 redemption arcbegan with him saving Patience from the dirt, it was clear by the end of “Halloween IV: The Witch” that she hadn’t successfully adjusted to life in the mansion. The ghosts remained afraid of her thanks to her creepy ability to make the walls bleed, and this power alienated her from them.
Patience’s Exit Paves The Way For New Spirits In Woodstone
Patience Mentioned “The Others” Upon Her Exit
Although she wasn’t popular among the show’s ghosts,Patience ominously mentioned that she would return to “The others” upon going back underground. This understandably unsettled everyone, since the ghosts assumed Patience was the only ghost trapped in the dirt. This did seem to directly contradict what she had said in earlier episodes about being lonely underground, but she may have been trying to make Isaac and Sass feel bad about abandoning her. Regardless of Patience’s confusing backstory, this comment proves that there might be other ghosts living beneath the mansion that the current cast of characters haven’t seen.
Ghosts season 4 can now replace Patience with some of the enigmatic “Others” she referenced upon her exit.
Unfortunately,Patience’s tragic catchphraseand her potential as a permanent member of the show’s lineup won’t be explored further in season 4 as “Halloween IV: The Witch” provided the character with a fairly definitive exit. Luckily,Ghostsseason 4 can now replace Patience with some of the enigmatic “Others” she referenced upon her exit. Since Patience didn’t explain what she meant or who she was referring to, this might remain a mystery until the sitcom decides to introduce its next new character.
How More Spirits Can Impact Sam & Jay’s Woodstone Mansion Story (& When They Might Appear)
Sam and Jay Live In Relative Harmony With The Ghosts For Now
New ghosts would have a major impact onGhostsseason 4, as evidenced by Patience’s brief but dramatic role in the series. Although the ghosts constantly seek her attention, as well as favors, Sam has a fairly stable relationship with the mansion’s paranormal inhabitants at this stage.Ghostsseason 3 was the first outing that was as heavily focused on the internal drama of the ghosts as Sam and Jay’s lives, and this was largely because Sam now got along well with the ghosts. A new arrival could easily disrupt this power balance inGhostsseason 4.
Devon Chandler Long
Thor
This is part of the reason thatNigel needed to move out inGhostsseason 4instead of becoming a member of the main cast. Isaac’s love interest was an intriguing, likable character in his own right, but the show’s balance of personalities finally reached equilibrium around season 3. Sam was no longer feuding with ghosts, struggling to solve Alberta’s murder, or unable to communicate their comments to Jay. Isaac ran the risk of upending this stability if he became a permanent addition. Instead, new ghosts should be temporary guest stars, like Patience was early inGhostsseason 4.
