Vanity FairA major critique ofNobody Wants Thisaffected the writer’s room before season 2 of Netflix’s hit rom-com premieres on October 23. Starring Kristin Bell and Adam Brody,Nobody Wants Thisreleased its first season on Netflix on July 12, 2025, to critical acclaim.
The plot ofNobody Wants Thisconsists of a non-religious podcaster falling in love with a rabbi. One major criticism the show faced was its depiction of Jewish women, like Brody’s character’s sister-in-law, Esther (Jackie Tohn), who is shown as very judgmental.Nobody Wants Thisis created by Erin Foster, who also acts as a co-showrunner alongside Craig DiGregorio, Jenni Konner, and Bruce Eric Kaplan.

During an interview withVanity Fair, Foster admitted that she was taken aback by the criticism of the show’s depiction of Jewish people, especially women.Vanity Fairalso revealed that a female rabbi was brought into the writer’s room in season 2 in order to create a change in the show’s writing, but Konner also claimed in the interview that not much has really changed.
Konner: “No one is trying to reinvent anything. We’re not going to shoot in black and white this year, or do a musical.”

Foster: “I was honestly very surprised, and I was disappointed. Find me another Jewish rom-com showing Jewish people in such a positive light, showing the Jewish faith in such a positive light. It’s something that I take very seriously as someone who converted and felt so welcomed by the Jewish community. With the heaviness of what’s going on in the world around the Jewish faith, to have a lighthearted, sweet, happy show that reminds people how beautiful Judaism is—don’t find something wrong with it! Take the win, you know?”
Konner: “Like any show, the second season is when you really start to develop your characters. So we develop Esther more and show why she behaves that way, and see her other sides.”

What This Means For Nobody Wants This Season 2
Jenni Konner and Erin Foster revealed that they tried to fix any misrepresentation that appeared inNobody Wants Thisseason 1, but it seems that not much will actually change story-wise for season 2. Based on the showrunners' comments, it seems as though all the main characters from the first season will be returning and won’t be drastically different.
However, the showrunners did mention that they would be working on developing Esther’s character inNobody Wants This, which many believe is one of the best TVshows on Netflix right now. This could mean that Esther will have fewer stereotypical traits and will be more of a fleshed-out human being rather than comedic relief.
Our Take On The Changes Coming In Nobody Wants This Season 2
While many Jewish people are involved in the production ofNobody Wants This, and nothing in the show was likely meant to be offensive, it is probably a good idea to take away anything that could be perceived as ignorant. The show has good representation of Jewish people, and there’s no reason to taint that with some tone-deaf character traits.
Bringing in a rabbi to discuss depicting Judaism onscreen with the writers of the show was a very good idea, and should have patched up any uncomfortable writing choices from the first season. However, only time will tell how significant the changes to Esther and other characters inNobody Wants Thiswill be.
