Warning: SPOILERS for chapter #406 of Hunter x HunterHunter x Hunterhas teased a most drastic turn in resolving one of the series' most important and longest-running conflicts, and while it is interesting, some fans aren’t too pleased with the possibility. However, it presents an incredible opportunity for character development as well as answering one of the series' biggest mysteries.

Chrollo Lucilfer took center stage in chapter #406 ofHunter x Hunter, where his plan to find and kill Hisoka was explained in greater detail. Meanwhile, on the same Black Whale ship, Kurapika is struggling and doing his best to ensure the survival of Prince Woble inthe Succession War, while also pursuing his goal of getting close to Prince Tserriednich to retrieve the eyes of his clan. Unaware of each other presence, Chrollo and Kurapika, who were mortal enemies during the Yorknew Arc, will probably soon collide again with completely unexpected consequences.

Chrollo And Kurapika’s Goals Finally Align

The Victim And His Oppressor Could Make A Truce

In this chapter, Chrollo revealed that the treasures that the Phantom Troupe are trying to steal on the ship are none other thanKakin’s three national treasures: the Seed Urn, the Sword of Good Omens, and the Lotus Anchorite. These powerful, Nen-charged items are not only integral for the prosperity and survival of the Kakin Empire, but they also keep the Succession War going, so it’s reasonable to think that stealing them would end the contest. The chapter ended with Chrollo heading to tier 1, where Kurapika is too.

Chrollo is planning to steal these items because stealing a national treasure is a requirement he has to fulfill to upgrade his Skill Hunter power. He needs this in order to steal a powerful Nen ability that will allow him to kill Hisoka once and for all. This new detail unveils a prerequisite for Skill Hunter, decades after the ability was first introduced in the story. More interesting, however, is the fact that Kurapika is also trying to find a resolution to the Succession War that would not entail the deaths of all but one of the Princes, and Chrollo’s plan may provide just that.

Longhi talking to Kurapika about her Nen Ability

In particular, stealing the Lotus Anchorite wouldend the Succession War, which is something Kurapika has been trying to do for a long time. The Lotus Anchorite oversees the war and enforces the rules, and it is probably responsible for killing Kacho when she tried to escape from the boat. This revelation presentsthe potential of a team-up between Kurapika and Chrollo, and while it might be hard for some fans to imagine Kurapika stomaching an alliance with the man who exterminated his entire clan, he has also shown a willingness to put down his goals of revenge if it means helping his loved ones.

Kurapika Will Do Anything To Protect Woble And Oito

Kurapika Will Face A Choice That Will Define Him Forever

During the Yorknew Arc, when Gon and Killua were captured by the Phantom Troupe, Kurapika faced a difficult decision: he could either pursue a hostage exchange or kill Chrollo on the spot.He ultimately decided to trade Gon and Killua for Chrollo, but he still felt a surge of anger over the situation. It took Melody’s flute to help calm him down. Thus, Kurapika has already shown he can put his goal of revenge against the Phantom Troupe aside, and is currently focused on retrieving the Kurta eyes instead. Moreover, throughout this arc, he has been analytical and strategic, suggesting that he would likely consider forming an alliance if it helps him escape his current predicament.

Besides being able to think long-term, the odds are stacked against Kurapika and this potential alliance won’t seem impossible. Not only is he aware ofBeyond Netero’s schemes in killing all the Princes but one, but the Prince and Queen he is guarding are by far the most disadvantaged in the contest as he only has Bill as an ally, while other Princes have multiple servants and guards. To even the odds, Kurapika decided to teach Nen to the servants and envoys of the other Princes, which has already exposed him to a near-deadly attack.

On Chrollo’s side, he also has a barrier to overcome before making this alliance.Kurapika killed Uvogin and his actions led to the death of Pakunoda, and while the two had it coming and Kurapika gave them a chance to live, he still killed two of Chrollo’s childhood friends. Pakunoda’s death especially hurt Chrollo, as he left her position in the Troupe vacant and irreplaceable. The Phantom Troupe flashbackdetailed just how close their bond is, so it will be interesting to see if Chrollo will forgive Kurapika long enough to form an alliance.

This Alliance Will Be A Necessity For Both Kurapika And Chrollo

Old Grudges Will Have To Be Put Aside For The Sake Of Present Goals

While the two hold a grudge against each other, they stand to gain a lot from this. Kurapika needs to end the Succession War if he wants to survive as well as rescue Woble, Oito, Bill, Melody, Bisky, and his other friends. Chrollo, on the other hand, needs someone familiar with Tier 1 and who knows the ins and outs of the place and the intricate relationships between the Princes. Kurapika can facilitate the heist since he made himself powerful and made connections.

Another interesting aspect is that in chapter #401, Theta, one of Tubeppa’s guards, promises to lend Kurapika an ability that allows one to make a contract with someone else and if the terms are violated, the person is forced into a state of Zetsu for a week. Since Kurapika and Chrollo won’t trust each other, this ability makes the possibility of an alliance even higher.

Hunter x Hunterhas subverted expectations yet again with an incredible twist that could shake up the story. Not only would an alliance provide a great moment for Kurapika to heal from his trauma but it could also allow him (and the readers) to find outthe truth about the Kura massacre. As the Succession War arc heats up, this new development could be one of the biggest in the series, and perhaps lead to a resolution of this incredible arc.
