A new image and story details forToy Story 5atD232024, for which Screen Rant was in attendance, has confirmed Woody and Buzz will face a different kind of threat that I find interestingly relatable.TheToy Storymoviesare known to have changed animation history, and their undying popularity can be attributed to more factors than one. However, one of the biggest reasons why allToy Storyfilms, includingLightyear, have succeeded is that they feature compelling villains.

While Sid’s cruelty towards the toys in the firstToy Storymovie is still pure nightmare fuel, Gabby Gabby’s defective voicebox and suspiciously polite tone inToy Story 4still gives me the heebie-jeebies. Since everyToy Storymovie has delivered new, memorable villains, the fifth installment in the franchise is expected to do the same. Thankfully, asthe updates forTory Story 5at D23 2024 suggest, it will likely feature one of the most relatable antagonists in the entire franchise.

Toy Story 5: Release Date, Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Despite Toy Story 4’s perfect ending between Buzz and Woody, Disney has announced Toy Story 5, and here’s everything we know so far.

Toy Story 5 Will Feature Woody & Buzz Against Technology

The Film Will Feature Less Human & Toy Threats

During the D23 Entertainment Showcase, which Screen Rant was present for, it was revealed that the toys in the acclaimed, award-winning Pixar franchisewill go against electronics in the new installment of the animated franchise. While story details remain unknown, it was confirmed that the film will feature an army of 50 Buzz Lightyears, who will all be stuck in toy mode. Even in thefirst image released forToy Story 5, Bonnie seems deeply engrossed in a device’s glowing screen while her abandoned toys watch her from afar.

The image clearly highlights that Woody, Buzz, and the other toys have seemingly been replaced by an advanced piece of technology. This will eventually set up the movie’s central conflict, prompting Woody and Buzz to save the day by making several provisions that ensure the toys remain relevant.Toy Story 5’s portrayal of the toys taking a stand against technology would be quite relatable for me because of its real-world allusions.

Toy Story 5’s Plot Is Already Extremely Relevant

It Sheds Light On A Common Concern Surrounding The Future Of Toys

In an ideal world, tablets, laptops, and other devices that allow video streaming would just be alternate sources of entertainment for kids when they grow tired of their toys. However, with monumental developments in AI, digital toys and technology are starting to replace the regular ones, making it hard not to wonder whether kids will eventually stop playing with “real” toys altogether. As someone who grew up with little to no digital technology as a child,I often see non-digital toys as crucial reminders of the simplicity of my childhood. Without them, my childhood would be incomplete.

Woody and Buzz seemingly share similar beliefs inToy Story 5, explaining why they grow increasingly concerned about Bonnie’s obsession with glowing screens. Their struggle to remain relevant and noticeable in the face of technological advancements in the film will be the perfect reflection of the fears many parents and caregivers, like me, have about technology overtaking the tangible experiences of childhood. This would makeToy Story 5’s storyline even more relevant, grounded, and relatable than all the previous films in the franchise.
