Severancestar Dichen Lachman addresses why Gemma is part of Lumon in the hit Apple TV+ series. The series follows several Lumon Industries employees who have undergone the “severance” procedure, meaning their work life memories and their personal life memories are split. One of the biggest mysteries inSeveranceis why Mark’s outie’s wife Gemma, who he thought to be dead, is working for Lumon. In addition to Lachman, thecast ofSeveranceincludes Adam Scott, Britt Lower, John Turturro, Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman, Patricia Arquette, and Christopher Walken.
FollowingSeveranceseason 2, episode 7, which is primarily focused on Gemma’s role at Lumon Industries, Lachman explains toEllewhy her character may have undergone the severance procedure. She points out that several of the items that can be seen in episode 7 are Lumon branded, which makes it clear that the mysterious company is very influential in the small town that Gemma and Mark live. However,Lachman is adamant that Gemma wouldn’t have undergone the severance procedure voluntarily. Read her full comments below:

That is still a mystery to me. But you’ll notice that they’re living in a Lumon world—everything they come in contact with is Lumon branded. The card that she’s looking at in the mail in this episode is from Lumon, the Christmas tree in their house is reminiscent of the Christmas tree in the Christmas room. So there’s some bigger involvement in terms of this town and this world. The possibilities are endless.
She definitely doesn’t want to be there. You’ll notice in the flashbacks that the doctor is present in the fertility clinic, he walks by in the background. So I definitely think she doesn’t want to be down there, and I don’t think Gemma would volunteer to be severed.

What Lachman’s Comments Mean For Gemma In Severance
Gemma Is Being Held Prisoner By Lumon In Severance Season 2
As is usually the case with the series,Severanceseason 2, episode 7answered several burning questions, but also created many more questions. The episode shows how Mark and Gemma met and fell in love. It established that they had a wonderful marriage, but also had to face some problems. For example, they struggled to get pregnant. This is something that Mark’s outie has admitted in the series, but this episode makes their failed pregnancy even more interesting. As Lachman points out in this interview,Lumon’s doctor is present at the fertility clinic.
Gemma is being held prisoner by Lumon’s doctor, who seems to have fallen in love with her.
After this episode ofSeverance, it seems very likely thatLumon somehow staged Gemma’s deathbecause they wanted to bring her down to the testing floor. Gemma is being held prisoner by Lumon’s doctor, who seems to have fallen in love with her. It’s almost as ifhe was scouting Mark and Gemma in the outside world before eventually orchestrating a plan to get them both to Lumon. It is not yet clear exactly how Gemma ended up at Lumon, but hopefully the remaining episodes ofSeveranceseason 2reveal more about her character.
Our Take On Lachman’s Comments About Gemma In Severance
Gemma Is One Of Severance’s Most Intriguing Characters
Season 2, episode 7, titled “Chikhai Bardo,” is undeniably one of the best episodes ofSeverance. After the huge reveal that Ms. Casey is actually Mark’s wife Gemma in season 1, the show has finally revealed more about her role at Lumon. The episode is also heartbreaking, sinceGemma remembers her old life, and wants nothing more than to be reunited with Mark. I still have many more questions about Gemma, but I hope she can potentially get some revenge against Lumon in future episodes ofSeverance.
