Summary
One of the most physically powerful characters in the Marvel Universe has always been theJuggernaut. Cain Marko aka Juggernaut can destroy practically anything he gets his hands on and can easily slam through whatever he wants with his unstoppable momentum. But the origin ofwhyhe sought out this power is absolutely heartbreaking.
The reason why Cain Marko so willingly became the Juggernaut is implied in 2015’sAmazing X-Men#19 by Christopher Yost and Jorge Fornes. In this story, while it’s only a quick glance, readers are shown thatCain wanted the power of Juggernaut so that he’d never be hurt again by anyone else.

Cain is shown cowering in his bed, as the shadow of his abusive father, Kurt, looms over him. It’s been shown a few times that Kurt Marko wasn’t a good man, and likely killedCharles Xavier’s fathersimply to steal his mother’s wealth. Kurt’s treatment of Cain wasn’t much better, which seems to be the catalyst for why Cain eventually sought out so much power.
Juggernaut Is Becoming a Marvel Franchise, With His Own Family to Rival the Hulk’s
Juggernaut is getting his own ‘family’ in Marvel Comics as more people take up their own ‘Juggernaut’ mantle, creating a franchise rivaling Hulk’s.
Cain Was Never The Strongest In His Life
Amazing X-Men#19 by Christopher Yost, Jorge Fornes, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Joe Caramagna
Cain Marko had a pretty difficult childhood. While he always put on an air of cruelty and strength, it was mostly an illusion. Cain would constantly get kicked out of school for victimizing others, but at home, he was almost always the victim. He was the son of the abusive Kurt Marko, who had absolutely no problem with reminding his son who was in charge. This horrible dynamic can be seen as far back as 1965 with Juggernaut’s very first appearance inX-Men#12 by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Alex Toth. Kurt blows up at his son when Cain mentions that he knows about his father’s role in the death of Charles' father.
The young Cain certainly didn’t make his relationship with Charles easy, hitting his new stepbrother in the head on their first meeting. That doesn’t change the fact that Charles easily defeated Cain at every opportunity, using his psychic powers to outshine Cain in sports and academics. It’s no surprise, therefore, thatCain would want to become the Juggernaut. Juggernaut’s power doesn’t actuallyrequirehim to be layered in armor, but after gaining the strength to support it, Cain has practically buried himself under piles and piles of metal, which is a pretty sad solution to his problem of constantly being beaten as a child.

Cain Marko Became The Juggernaut To Avoid Being Hurt By People
A lot of characters end up seeking power because of the tragedies they suffered as children, but rarely do they go to the lengths that Cain Marko has. Even though Cain gained unbelievable physical strength, that wasn’t enough for him. Cain didn’t just want the power to hurt others, he wanted to never be hurt again. So he put on layer after layer of armor, ensuring that people couldn’t hurt him physically, and he pushed away anyone who could hurt him emotionally. That’s ultimately the tragic reason that Cain Marko became the unstoppableJuggernaut.
