TheX-Menwill soon come to theMarvel Cinematic Universe, and when the franchise’s version of the team debuts, I don’t believe that Denzel Washington should play its Magneto, despite the many rumors that he could do so.There are few Marvel characters more interesting or complex than Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto. WhileFox’s X-Men moviesdid have their issues, I believe the casting for the franchise’s key roles was always on point. That becomes evident when it comes to Magneto’s role in both iterations of the X-Men movie franchise.

Ian McKellen was iconic as the older Magneto, who was the leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants and had a history with Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier. Then came Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, who audiences saw build a relationship with James McAvoy’s Professor X and the rest of the X-Men. Soon, McKellen will return as his version of Magneto as part of thecast ofAvengers: Doomsday. However, at 85, it is clear thathe will serve in a temporary multiverse role, and despite rumors he will play the MCU’s Magneto, I don’t think Denzel Washington should take the vacant role.

Denzel Washington Has Been Rumored To Play The MCU’s Magneto

The Actor Will Join The MCU In A Major Movie

As one of Hollywood’s biggest stars and with a proven track record when it comes to action movies, I have always wanted to see Washington join the franchise. The role I most want to see him play is Blue Marvel, which I believe would not only suit the actor’s talents, but also be great for his current age. However, I don’t think that is in the cards, as the actor will soon join the MCU in an interesting movie, asWashington revealed he will be part ofBlack Panther 3.

Black Panther 3

TBD

According to the Hollywood legend, director Ryan Coogler is writing a role for him in the upcoming trilogy finale of the Black Panther franchise. No details have been shared about the character, but Washington has been rumored to play the MCU’s Magneto for some time now. With him confirmed forBlack Panther 3and howWakanda is famous for its Vibranium reserves, it would be intriguing to watch Magneto have a go at the country. That said, I simply cannot see Washington playing the MCU’s Magneto, as it would present a major problem for Marvel.

I’m Convinced Denzel Washington Is Too Old For The MCU’s Magneto

The Franchise Needs Magneto To Be Around For The Long Term

The main issue that I have with Washington possibly playing the MCU’s Magneto is related to his age. The actor is 70, and while I know that both Magneto and Charles Xavier have been depicted as older many times in live-action, animation, comics, and other mediums, I don’t believe that the MCU would be making the right move by going for an actor in that age range for its version of Magneto. To start, both X-Men franchise original Charles Xavier and Magneto starsPatrick Stewart and Ian McKellen were around ten years younger than Washingtonwhen they played them.

Who Is Denzel Washington Playing In Black Panther 3: 10 Best Marvel Casting Choices

Denzel Washington revealed he will appear in Black Panther 3, confirming the Marvel film, and there are exciting characters he could play in the MCU.

Then came the James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender versions of Professor X and Magneto, who were quite younger than the original actors who played the roles in Fox’s X-Men franchise. In the lead-up to theMCU’s X-Men reboot movie, which is being written byThe Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakesscribe Michael Lesslie, multiple casting reports have claimed that Marvel is looking at stars in their 20s-30s for the X-Men heroes. As such, at 70, Washington feels too old for the MCU’s Magneto, and I don’t think he would hang around for over a decade.

We Already Know The Perfect Magneto Actor For The MCU

The Superhero Universe Needs A Magneto That Stays For At Least A Decade

The X-Men are bound to be a major part of the MCU after debuting, and I’m convinced that whoever is cast in key roles in the franchise will need to play their character for at least the next decade, with potential for more, such as is Hugh Jackman’s case with Wolverine. Washington is a busy actor who is often seen in awards circuit roles. I can’t see the actor having the time the MCU would need him to dedicate to the X-Men franchise, nor do I want Magneto and Charles Xavier to be in their 70s when the X-Men debut.

At 48 and with multiple X-Men movies under his belt,I think Fassbender is the perfect choice for the MCU’s Magneto. Having Magneto and Professor X be in their late 40s or 50s would ensure that they feel older than the core X-Men and more experienced. By bringing back the best actor in Fox’s X-Men franchise, Marvel could deliver a gripping and complex version of Magneto that could stick around for the next decade. Whenaddressing a possible return as the MCU’s Magneto, Fassbender said, “Never say never,” leaving the door open for myX-Men franchise hopes.
