I would really love to see Scarlett Johansson rejoin theMCUinAvengers: Doomsday, especially now that Chris Evans has also joined the huge cast for 2026’s highly-anticipated Russo brothers crossover. Johansson’sNatasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow, was one of the MCU’s longest-running, and one of my favorite, superheroes prior to her death in 2019’sAvengers: Endgame. While 2021’s retrospectiveBlack Widowgave her one last ride in the MCU, I felt as though the movie failed to do Natasha Romanoff justice.

I’ve always consideredBlack Widow to be one of the most insultedand wasted heroes in the MCU, and I always wanted Scarlett Johansson to get more attention. Natasha Romanoff’s death and the failures ofBlack Widowleft me wanting a lot more, and, thankfully,I think there’s now a clear way that Marvel Studios can finally give Johansson the focus she deserves. Marvel confirmed the Russo brothers and Robert Downey Jr. are returning in2026’sAvengers: Doomsdayback in July 2024, and they’ve now been joined by another exciting MCU veteran.

Chris Evans Is Returning To The MCU In Avengers: Doomsday

Chris Evans Played Captain America Between 2011 & 2019

It was reported in December 2024 that, after a five-year break from the MCU and a recent cameo appearance inDeadpool & Wolverine,Chris Evans will be returning to the MCUinAvengers: Doomsday.Evans portrayed Steve Rogers' Captain America in ten MCU movies between 2011 and 2019, and we also saw him make cameo appearances inThor: The Dark WorldandDeadpool & Wolverine, becoming the MCU’s most consistent actor. I thought Steve Rogers’Avengers: Endgameending was perfect, but I’m still very excited about his return to the MCU.

It is, of course, possible that Chris Evans will be bringing Steve Rogers' Captain America back to the MCU, but the true nature of his role inAvengers: Doomsdayhasn’t been revealed. I’ve loved seeing theories suggesting Evans could be playing aHYDRA-indoctrinated Captain America, or perhaps even taking on an entirely new role, similarly to Robert Downey Jr., who will debut as Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man.Whoever Chris Evans plays inAvengers: Doomsday, his return only makes me want to see Scarlett Johansson back in the MCU even more.

Avengers: Doomsday Will Likely Include All Original Avengers Cast Members (Except One)

Scarlett Johansson Is The Last Original Avenger To Be Cast In Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. would be rejoining the MCU at 2024’s SDCC, set to bring Doctor Doom to life inAvengers: Doomsday, which will ensure thatTony Stark’s emotional sacrifice fromEndgameremains untouched. Now, Chris Evans will be reuniting with Downey Jr. inDoomsday, though we’re still not sure which character Evans will be playing in the upcoming crossover event. While none of them have yet been confirmed, I think it’s likely the other members of the original Avengers team will join them.

10 Harsh Realities Of The Original MCU Avengers Team

The MCU’s introduction of the Avengers remains an iconic cinematic moment, but there were some issues with the original iteration of the team.

I have no doubt that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner and Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton, even after his recent recovery, will have a role inAvengers: Doomsday. Alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, this means all the male components of theMCU’s original Avengers teamfrom 2012’s eponymousThe Avengerswill be reuniting. This just makes me want to see Scarlett Johansson come back to the MCU even more, as it would be a horrible shame for her to be left out of this epic reunion.

I Want Scarlett Johansson To Reunite With The Avengers Cast In Doomsday

Scarlett Johansson May Have Reservations About Rejoining The MCU

Natasha Romanoff was insulted time and again by Marvel Studios during her MCU career, regularly being sidelined and neglected when she deserved a lot more attention. I would consider it the final nail in the coffin if Scarlett Johansson doesn’t now return to reunite with every other member of the originalAvengers team inAvengers: Doomsday, as it seems the entire gang is getting back together. As much as I want this to happen, however,Johansson herself might have reservations about returning in the wake of her lawsuit against Disney.

While any legal disputes may suggest that Scarlett Johansson would rather avoid coming back to the MCU, recent events seem to imply that the past is now in the past.Johansson is credited as an executive produceron 2025’s upcomingThunderbolts*movie, which includes a number of the cast members fromBlack Widow, andJohansson is still expected to be working on another MCU project as a producer. This suggests her relationship with Marvel Studios is still strong, which makes me think it would be easy for her to return on-screen.

Who Could Scarlet Johansson Play In Avengers: Doomsday?

Scarlett Johansson Wouldn’t Need To Return As Black Widow

If she does return, it would make sense for Scarlett Johansson to reprise her iconic MCU role of Natasha Romanoff’s Black Widow. However, since Robert Downey Jr. has been recast and Chris Evans may be playing a different role,I reckon it would be great to see Scarlett Johansson suit up as a completely new Marvel character. There’s been speculation that the original Avengers cast will playvillains inAvengers: Doomsday, with Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and Evans as HYDRA’s Captain America, which opens the door for Johansson to play a twisted version of her MCU hero.

This makes me think she could simply be playing a more comic-accurate version of Black Widow, as she’s far more morally ambiguous and has a villainous backstory in Marvel Comics. There’s also been talk of Johansson’s possible connection to the Blonde Phantom, who I’d love to see in the MCU, while she would also be great as someone connected to Doctor Doom, perhaps Cynthia Von Doom or even Valeria Richards.Avengers: Doomsdayis gearing up to be one of Marvel Studios' biggest and most exciting projects, and I am desperate for Scarlett Johansson to be involved.
