Unusually for a show aimed primarily at kids, the second episode of Pixar’s new streaming showWin or Losedecides to focus on the life of a teacher. For the whole 20 minutes of “Blue,” the series pans back from the softball square and follows Frank, a socially awkward perfectionist who loves his job teaching children, but is also lovesick over a colleague he broke up with before the events of the show. Luckily, a mysterious friend called Francis is on hand to help him get over his broken heart.

Partway through the episode, after Frank has finished speaking with two of his students,Win or Lose’s transgender protagonist Kaiand their friend Rochelle, Francis appears from behind the classroom door, holding a sponge. He appears to be cleaning, but seems more intent on getting involved in Frank’s love life.He promptly downloads a dating app, and encourages Frank to move onfrom his romantic woes. Francis appears twice more in the episode, each time to give Frank a further push with matters of the heart.

Francis Is The School Janitor In Win Or Lose

He’s Cleaning The School Building Whenever He Appears

The sudden appearance of Francis from a shadowy corner of the classroom presents him as a mysterious figure in Frank’s world. He may even be imaginary, since no one else seems to see him during the episode. However, it’s clear fromthe sponge he’s holding, the overalls he’s wearing, and the cleaning trolleythat he pushes out of the room that Francis is the janitor at the school where Frank works.

The veneer of mystery around him may simply be because he slips by unnoticed by most people in the school, ashe moves around the building doing the work that no one else will do. This work includes mopping the school corridor, which causes Frank to slip and fly into the air during the final moments of the episode.

Why Francis Talks To Frank In Particular

Francis Serves As Frank’s Inner Guide And Guardian Angel

It suggests something about the kind of good-naturedcharacter Frank is inWin or Losethat he alone seems to notice Francis, acknowledging and speaking to him when others in the school don’t. However, what’s more obvious is that Francis notices him, and him in particular. It actually feels as though Francis is Frank’s guardian angel of sorts, dropped into the episode to save him from loneliness and despair.

On the one hand, this seems like the realistic approach of one friendly colleague to another. As Francis says to Frank, “I’m your wingman, I’m not leaving…” But, on the other hand, there is definitely something otherworldly about Francis, from how he appears and disappears in sudden bursts of movement to the way he seems invisible to everyone but Frank.

Francis serves as Frank’s inner voice, pushing him to believe in himself and take a chance in life.

It’s no coincidence that the two of them share the same name, with “Frank” being short for “Francis.” Francis serves as Frank’s inner voice, pushing him to believe in himself and take a chance in life. He’s half-real, in the sense that he really does seem to be a janitor, and half-imaginary, there purely to provide moral support and guidance to Frank. Having a character straddle the real and the imaginary in this way is nothing less than the creative storytelling we’d expect fromPixar, especially in their first big project of 2025and their first-ever flagship series on Disney+.

How Francis Gives Frank Advice About His Life

He Pushes Him To Express Who He Really Is To Others

After downloading a dating app on Frank’s phone without his permission, Francis proceeds to take charge of overseeing every aspect of Frank’s love life. He makes Frank scrap the banal, impersonal dating profile he initially creates for himself, andopens him up to the idea of showing his true self, even if that means exposing inner vulnerabilities. This approach leads Frank to have success chatting online to a date who shares many of his interests and seems to connect with him emotionally.

While there are plenty of great animated TV series, only a few were genuine masterpieces that left an undeniable impact on the art form.

Francis’ final act of support for Frank is to mop the floor in front of him as he slides out of control towards the door. This act serves as a metaphor for Francis encouraging Frank to accept that most aspects of life are not under his control. If he just enjoys the ride, he can fly to reach his true potential. Unfortunately, Frank’s brief attempt at flight results in a crash landing, both in a physical sense and in terms of his love life. Like everything inWin or Loseso far, nothing is that simple. Without Francis, though, Frank would never have left the ground.
