Lucasfilm is set on bringingThe Mandalorianfranchise to the big screen, though the opportunity to tell some exciting prequel stories shouldn’t be ignored. Set to release in 2026,The Mandalorian & Groguwill be the firstStar Warstheatrical release since 2019’sStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, I’d also love to see some new stories set before the events ofThe Mandalorianseason 1.
Kicking off Lucasfilm’s New Republic Era shows on Disney+,The Mandaloriancurrently consists of three seasons, starring Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and his adopted son Grogu. The Mandalorianalso inspired two spin-off series withThe Book of Boba FettandAhsoka, and all three shows have referenced key events in theStar Warstimeline that deserve to be seen.As such, prequel comics could be a great way for Lucasfilm to expandThe Mandalorianfranchise even further.

The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie Is Star Wars' Next Big Movie
Evolving From Streaming To The Big Screen
Currently,The Mandalorian & Groguis set to be the next big addition toThe Mandalorianfranchise.Rather than aMandalorianseason 4, Din Djarin and his adopted son will be coming to the big screen as they’ve become major commodities who can successfully herald the return ofStar Warsto theaters. While not much is known about the movie currently, it’s been confirmed that Jon Favreau will continue to serve as director, having been the creator and showrunner for the series on Disney+ with Dave Filoni.
The movie will pick up afterThe Mandalorianseason 3, meaning Mandalore is reclaimed, Grogu is officially Djarin’s adopted son with the duo living on Nevarro, and Din Djarin is now working with the Aldelphi Rangers to track down Imperial Remnant warlords lurking in the Outer Rim, a new status quo that will still allow him to make use of his years of experience and skills as a bounty hunter. To that end, it’s clear thatThe Mandalorianfranchise has an exciting future ahead. However, I also think there’s some exciting potential in the past.

I Still Want To Know More About The Mandalorian’s History
Din Djarin’s Training And Early Years With The Children of the Watch
InThe Mandalorianseries, it was revealed through brief flashbacks thatDin Djarin was orphaned by Separatist battle droids at the end of the Clone Wars on the planet Aq Vetina. However, he was also saved and taken by the Mandalorian sect known as the Children of the Watch, descendants of the Death Watch group that tried to take Mandalore by force during the Clone Wars, resisting the prominent pacifist agendas and rule of the era, which itself was a rejection of the Mandalorians' years of history and sacred warrior traditions.Becoming a Mandalorian foundling, Djarin was trained in the ancient Way of the Mandalore, becoming an impressive warrior in his own right and eventually a skilled bounty hunter.
The Bad Batch Has a New Villain, And They Share a Major Connection to The Mandalorian
The rumored villain of the upcoming “Mandalorian & Grogu” movie has returned in Dark Horse’s latest Star Wars comic to battle the Bad Batch.
Not a lot is known about Djarin’s early years beyond his rescue. We know very little about what his training was like during the days of the original trilogy, nor when he first started bounty hunting in the Outer Rim.As such, I’d find it very exciting if Lucasfilm sought to eventually reveal more about Din Djarin and his past. Likewise, Din Djarin isn’t the only Mandalorian with a fascinating past whose history deserves to be told in some fashion.

More Mandalorians' Stories Could Be Explored As Well
Sabine and Bo-Katan Are Beginning For Prequel Stories
Other Mandalorians such as Bo-Katan Kryze and Sabine Wren more than deserve to have their pasts explored as well. After all, Bo-Katan Kryze became Mandalore’s regent inStar Wars Rebels, having been given the Darksaber by Sabine as a symbol of her leadership. However, Bo-Katan losing her Darksaber and her world to the Empire has only been briefly referenced and hardly shown beyond a few short sequences showcasing the Imperial bombardment known asThe Night of 1,000 Tears, where Mandalore was ravaged and Bo-Katan’s people massacred, the few survivors being scattered across the galaxy for years.
“It does seem as though Lucasfilm does have the makings of a truly great prequel story that could explore the histories of several beloved Mandalorian characters (and their allies)…”

It would be very exciting to learn more about thisincredibly dark period for Bo-Katan and Mandalore, an event that also affected Sabine Wren and her own off-screen past. Referenced in 203’sAhsoka, Sabine was initially trained by Ahsoka Tano to become a Jedi in the aftermath ofStar Wars Rebels. However, Ahsoka Tano grew concerned by the grief and the potential for darkness to grow within Sabine following the Purge of Mandalore and the deaths of Sabine’s entire family.
It would be just as exciting to see what Sabine and Ahsoka’s first round of Jedi training was like, not to mention the events leading up to the master and apprentice going their separate ways ahead of theAhsokaseries. Additionally, it would be great to know the full extent of Sabine’s role during the original trilogy (and Ahsoka’s).To that end, it does seem as though Lucasfilm does have the makings of a truly great prequel story that could explore the histories of several beloved Mandalorian characters (and their allies).

Prequel Mandalorian Comics Could Be The Easiest Way To Explore The Past
Expanding The Franchise Both On The Screen and Page
Rather than happening in a show or movie, a canonical comic series does seem like the most logical means forMandalorianprequel stories to become a reality with Lucasfilm. I truly do feel like there’s so much potential for a prequel comic to flesh out the big gaps in Din Djarin and his fellow Mandalorians' history during the Dark Times, the Galactic Civil War, and New Republic eras.TheMandalorianhas become a key flagship anchoring everything else in the granderStar Warsfranchise right now, so why not use the comics to keep expanding its popularity and engagement?
Star Wars Just Confirmed A Major Mandalorian Return In The Next Movie
The Mandalorian and Grogu will be Star Wars' next movie, and the franchise just subtly confirmed that one Mandalorian return is coming.
Considering just how popular Din Djarin and his fellow Mandalorian characters are, it does seem like a no-brainer to find new ways to keep expanding their stories, especially when there are some pretty good-sized holes and questions that fans would love to have answered. Likewise, using the medium of comics could provide a low risk and cheaper means for Lucasfilm to show and expand these desired prequel stories toStar Warsfans, rather than just telling and/or making brief allusions on screen.

WithThe Mandalorian & Grogustill more than a year out from its release, new prequel Mandalorian comics would certainly help hold me over. However, perhaps Din Djarin, Sabine, and/or Bo-Katan could be featured inMarvel’s upcomingStar Warscomic set in the New Republic’s earliest years, starring Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa. While unconfirmed, aStar Warsfan can certainly dream.
