WARNING: This article includes SPOILERS from Agatha All Along episode 3.TheAgatha All Alongshowrunner opens up about theMarvel Cinematic UniverseTV show name-dropping Mephisto. As the MCU keeps expanding with new heroes and villains, the franchise finally brought in a fan-favorite to the continuity. While not shown on screen (yet),Agatha All Alongepisode 3 dropped a hugeconfirmation of Mephistoby referring to him by name for the first time in the MCU.

In an interview withTotal Film,Agatha All Alongcreator Jac Schaeffer was asked about the MCU finally establishing that Mephisto exists in the franchise.Schaeffer made it clear that it was a nod to the many theories that sparked during her first MCU show,WandaVision,as she shared the following:

Mephisto laughing in Marvel Comics

That was a nod, definitely, yes. […] So the fan theories themselves don’t inform like the actual plotting that I do or that Marvel does either. It’s really more, I like to think about what is the thing people are engaging on? Like, what is the thing that’s sort of lighting them up? And is it the thing that’s lighting me up? That’s where I feel that I’m successful and my team is successful, when we can find that sweet spot of we are excited about it, it’s making our brains tingle, and making us want to dress up, but it’s also having that effect on fans.

Schaeffer also spoke withEntertainment Weeklyand teased what the MCU may have in store for Mephisto, following the Easter egg inAgatha All Along. While stressing that Mephisto has an involvement with Agatha in the lore, Schaeffer added the following:

With these shows, so often there is something that is at once a joke and a wink and a nod, and actually has something legitimate underneath. As we all know, Mephisto is a character who’s very wrapped into Agatha’s storyline. I mean, people have to watch, but we’re always playing with the audience in that way.

What Agatha All Along’s Mephisto Reveal Means For The MCU

Now that Mephisto exists in the MCU as an actual character,Marvel Studios has essentially opened Pandora’s box on the classic villain for future movies and TV shows. AftertheAgatha All Alongepisode 3 ending, it is possible that Mephisto will be the central antagonist of the series, given the ties he and Agatha have in Marvel Comics. Since they have yet to reveal the actual main villain inAgatha All Along, having him name-dropped in episode 3 is definitely a solid seed that the writers have now planted for upcoming episodes.

Whether or not the Disney+ series will feature Mephisto after his reference inAgatha All Alongepisode 3remains to be seen, though it was reported in 2022 that Sacha Baron Cohen had been cast as the demon for another MCU show,Ironheart. If Mephisto shows up, it will likely be towards the end of the season. It would be in true Marvel Studios fashion if Mephisto’s live-action debut is one of the many secrets that they have been keeping under wraps forAgatha All Along.
