The newest free update toNo Man’s Sky,calledThe Cursed, takes players to a spookier part of the galaxy where players will fight against foes both real and imaginary. The update comes right in time for Halloween and the spooky season, and will only be active for two weeks. The update takes the game to horrors of a more psychological and metaphysical nature, creating a deeply unsettling atmosphere.

Expedition Sixteen: The Cursedadds a whole new expedition to the game that focuses on a mysterious new location. The update, detailed on theNo Man’s Skywebsite and shared byHelloGamesTubeon YouTube, will have travelers content with “visions and voices from another dimension.“Players will need to decide who and what to trust as they uncover the story of The Cursed, an area located on the boundary between realities. This new location is populated by strange drifting creatures who are mostly harmless but sometimes attack players and cause time to “begin to behave in non-linear ways.”

The cryptic YouTube video shows several of the new enemies that players will encounter in this strange land, which include time- and reality-altering anomalies and Lovecraftian horrors. Players will be urged forward in their travels by haunting voices that seem to be leaking in through other realities, which “will provide guidance information, strange blueprints… and mystery.” However, players will have to determine which of these voices to listen to and whether they can trust them.

The Update Brings Limited-Time Rewards

The event bringsseveral limited-time quests and rewards to the game, including the flying-saucer-inspired Boundary Herald Starship. Also up for grabs is the terrifying Boundary Horror wearable, which turns players' helmets into the visage of the great anomaly of the deep, Cthulhu. Players can also unlock the “Bioluminescent Companion” a creature that seems to glow from the inside and serves as both mount and pet.

Starfield, Star Wars Outlaws & No Man’s Sky Comparison Video Has A Clear Winner For One Key Feature

A fan video compares the spaceship landing animations of all three games side by side, and the results might not be what you were expecting.

Players will be able tounlock other rewards as they progress through the story, including posters for decoration (and to warn others of the anomalies), a dynamic sculpture depicting the “Anomaly Seal,” and a special anomaly-imbued jetpack trail. Finally, the expedition will have players creating and drinking different elixirs, and the wording on the website hints that the final elixir, the Elixir of Water, may have permanent repercussions on players, though it’s not clear what, exactly, those are.

Say Goodbye To Hyperdrive And Hello To The Ancient Portal Network

Reality Seems To Be Bending And Shifting Around the Player

TheCursedupdate places players in a “sort of twilight realm, straddling the boundary between one reality and the next.” Due to this unique location, travelerswill not be able to use Hyperdrive tech to warp between systems. But they won’t be completely stranded, as the Ancient Portal Network will still be accessible as a means of traveling between planets. Besides this, players will have to contend with something even more dangerous than extreme temperatures, toxins, and radioactivity: “The weakening of the boundaries of reality.”

To give players a chance against the unraveling of time and space itself, player exosuits are getting an upgrade in the form of an Anomaly Suppressor. This specialized part is meant to keep players rooted in the correct reality, though it won’t be as easy as that. Reality seems to be bending and shifting all around the player, and it will be up to them to determine who to trust, where to go, and maintain their footing on stable ground within the correct reality.
