Nosferatu’s awards prospects are turning around after its Golden Globes shutout due to a new set of nominations. The 2024 movie, which was written and directed by Robert Eggers, is a remake of the 1922 German silent classic of the same name, which in turn was an unauthorized adaptation of the Bram Stoker vampire novelDracula. It has been a major success, withNosferatureviewsearning it a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 85%. At the time of writing, it has also grossed more than $130 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing non-prequel, non-sequel horror movie of the year.
In spite of its success,Nosferatuhas had something of a rocky start during the 2024-2025 awards season. TheRobert Eggers moviehas been nominated for four Critics Choice Awards and earned an accolade for Cinematography from the National Board of Review, but it received no nominations at the Gotham Awards, the SAG Awards, or the Independent Spirit Awards. This was compounded by being completely shut out at the Golden Globe Awards, which have a wider slate of nominees due to many categories being split up by genre.

TheNosferaturemakehas now regained steam due to the BAFTA nominations. The BAFTA Awards are presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in a ceremony that has taken place annually since 1949. The BAFTAs are consideredone of the major awards ceremonies that help determine what may be nominated at the Academy Awards, alongside ceremonies such as the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, and the Critics Choice Awards.
While the BAFTA Awards have special categories honoring British nominees, they award a variety of international films as well.
PerDeadline,Nosferatuhas now been nominated for five BAFTA Awards, namely Cinematography, Costume Design, Makeup and Hair, Original Score, and Production Design. It is tied for five nominations with the Coralie Fargeat body horror movieThe Substance, which was previously nominated for five Golden Globes, winning one (Best Actress - Musical or Comedy for Demi Moore).

It Is Still In The Running For Oscars
This resurgence at the BAFTAs shows thatNosferatuis not yet out of the running for the2025 Oscar nominations. In fact, it has already been shortlisted for Best Original Score and Best Makeup and Hairstyling among the 10 categories for which the Academy has released shortlists. However, given the horror movie’s track record and its shortlisted categories,it seems likely that it will continue to be nominated in technical categoriesrather than more prominent nominations such as acting awards, Best Director, and Best Picture.
