Percy Jackson & the Olympiansauthor Rick Riordan provides a cautiously optimistic update on a potential season 3 of the Disney+ show. Adapting the events of Riordan’s beloved novel series, the fantasy show premiered in 2023, chronicling the adventures of Demigod Percy (Walker Scobell) and his friends Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava' Jeffries) and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri). The series was a hit, andPercy Jackson & the Olympiansseason 2is now confirmed to arrive at some point this year, but the show’s future beyond that has remained up in the air.

In a new post on Bluesky,Riordanshares aPercy Jackson & the Olympiansseason 3 update, revealing that a writers' room is being convened to start planning scripts. Though he is “optimistic,” Riordan is careful to note, however, that season 3 has not been given the official go-ahead from Disney just yet. Check out his post below:

“Excited to meet with the PJO writers' room today to discuss potential plans for season three,” Riordan writes. “This does NOT mean the third season is green-lighted yet, but we have been cleared to start a room and begin planning scripts, because assuming the show DOES go forward, we have to start now. Optimistic.”

Riordan co-createdPercy Jackson & the Olympiansalongside Jonathan E. Steinberg. Riordan also wrote multiple episodes of season 1.

What Riordan’s Update Means For Percy Jackson & The Olympians' Future

The Response To Season 1 Is A Positive Sign For Season 3

The response toPercy Jackson & the Olympiansseason 1 was generally very positive, and this bodes well for the series' future. OnRotten Tomatoes, the series enjoys a 91% score from criticsand a 79% from audiences. Reviews generally praised the show for its strong performances and its faithful adaptation of Riordan’s work. In herPercy Jacksonseason 1 reviewforScreenRant, Mae Abdulbaki awarded the series seven out of 10 stars, highlighting the show’s effective balancing of character development and action:

The series works because it keeps all the important elements from the book and builds upon them. The characters are what drive the story forward, and it’s nice that theseries allows them breathing room while never forgetting about the quest itself.

Percy Jackson Can’t Wait Until Season 3 To Introduce 1 Olympian God Character

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is still missing one major Greek god, and the show can’t wait until season 3 to introduce the character.

It’s viewership that determines whether a show continues, however, andPercy Jackson & the Olympianshas been a win in this area as well. According to data fromLuminate, the series beat Marvel andStar Warsshows to be Disney+’s most-watched show of 2024. This is obviously a promising sign for season 3 moving forward, butPercy Jacksonis an expensive show to make, and the bar for success is likely very high for its renewal. For season 3 to move forward, season 2 will have to maintain this strong momentum.

Percy Jacksonseason 3 would presumably adapt the events of Riordan’s third book in the series,The Titan’s Curse. There are seven books in the series in total.

Our Take On Riordan’s Percy Jackson Season 3 Update

Season 2 Needs To Be Another Win

At a time when it feels like both Marvel andStar Warsare faltering, Disney+ could use a reliable audience draw likePercy Jackson. Ideally, the show will run for years to come after thePercy Jacksonseason 1 ending, butthe show will have to maintain high quality in its storytelling and filmmakingto keep viewers entertained, especially in an age when there is so much competition.

One major issue facing the show is that the youngPercy Jacksoncastmembers will age and quickly become far older than their characters are supposed to be. By getting the season 3 writers' room going early, the wait for more episodes after season 2 hopefully won’t be too long, and this problem won’t become too noticeable. While season 3 remains a question mark,Percy Jackson & the Olympiansseason 2 now hopefully isn’t far off.
