I had gottenProject Zomboidfor a friend as a gift, as he’d always wanted to try the game but hadn’t bitten the bullet to buy it. Teaching him the ropes felt good, like a grizzled post-apocalyptic survivor (with a mean silver beard) teaching someone who recently emerged from a coma about the new rules dictating the ravaged landscape. While it was a ton of fun — full stop — it did lead to the inevitable question mostProject Zplayers will ask themselves eventually, “What’s the point of it all?”
Even thoughProject Zomboidis arguably one of the best sandbox zombie games ever created, his complaint isn’t a meritless one. Althoughthe nature of any sandbox is that there isn’t really a point— dodging rabid patients infected with the Knox Infection andforaging for foodcan get old after a while without a meaningful endpoint. That said, it’s something that will eventually come to the game, even if the developers have been working on the much-anticipated update for years at this point.

I Can’t Wait For Build 42
The Biggest Project Zomboid Update In Years
My friend and I are no strangers tosandbox survival games. We’re veterans of titles likeRustandThe Forest, and we typically go out of our way to try the newest survival titles, so the concept of being able to eventually sustain and build some sort of production workflow and a more solidified fortress inProject Zwas something that appealed to both of us. As it stands, while the game is a ton of fun, an upcoming update aims to add a lot more.Build 42 will be the biggest and most substantial expansionsince Build 41 was released in December 2021.
According to rumors and a recent closed beta (viaTheGamer), Build 42 could be released on the unstable branch as soon as late 2024 or early 2025.

Although it’s more than possible to role-play, with most people’s goal inProject Zbeing tosurvive as long as possible, the expansive update will add a host of new features to the end game that will make sustaining in the post-apocalypse easier. These include things like a wide variety of new end-gamecrafting stations, items, and materials. It will also include the highly-requested mechanic of farming, which solves the food crisis once all the canned goods and other looted scraps have been devoured.
Build 42 will also add a host of other new mechanics and features, likeskyscrapers, animals, new locations, and QoL enhancements, that should make the experience better overall. In some ways, it’ll make it more of a traditional survival game with different things you can use to live off the land for the long haul. Even though you can last pretty long in the game currently, it’s hard to build a real community in the vanilla version. More information on all of the updates has been outlined in a fairly detailed way on theProject Zomboidblog.

Surviving The Z Apocalypse With A Friend Is More Fun
If You Haven’t Tried Co-Op, You Should
I’m a big horror nerd, so scary games don’t exactly scare me too much anymore. That said, playingProject Zomboidsolo is an extremely isolating experience. With no human NPCs other than undead on the map, being left by yourself in an infested town with shambling horrors lurking around every corner is quite a scary prospect. Playing with a friend who can provide emotional and physical support makes the game a lot easier and, in my opinion, a lot more fun.
You’re About To Play This Classic 10-Year-Old Zombie Game Again
This decade-old Early Access title on Steam is getting a major overhaul soon, which will completely change the survival zombie horror game.
While we’ll have to wait till Build 43 to getProject ZNPCs, the developers are well aware that more communal aspects are highly requested, and to that respect, The Indie Stone will address it by providing awider array of professions and starting traitsin Build 42, which should help in larger multiplayer servers. Even in a smaller squad of three or four (if I can get my other friends to play), having more unique options will certainly make the experience feel more unique.

I’ve also playedProject Zwith my wife, which was an interesting insight into what would actually happen if a zombie apocalypse broke out. Even though we both enjoyed ourselves and had a blast, let’s just say the real-life results probably wouldn’t be pretty.

Returning To Zomboid Made It Feel Fresh
Taking A Break Made Me Appreciate The Game More
Getting back intoProject Zomboidafter about a year’s break made it feel like new again. Teaching my friend to keep his cool and stop sprinting around like a chicken with his head cut off made me remember why I enjoyed this indie gem. Also, it reminded me thatProject Zomboidis an incredibly difficult game, especially for those who have never played it before. I ended up having to turn off zombie respawns in an effort to actually survive more than a day through our first couple of lives.
Because in Project Zomboid, it’s not a matter of whether you’ll die; it’s a matter of when.

The automatic spawn-in is a must-use mechanic if you are playing with friends, as trying to sneak around town and meet up using a pencil and a map is just about as much fun as it sounds. My friend is a pretty harsh critic, and because the learning curve for the game is fairly high — it was rough going for a while. Repeatedly dying and trying to invent tactics like funneling the zombies through the doors or herding them away from key points of interest was something that I felt like I was re-learning with him.
Prepare For The Scariest Halloween Ever Thanks To Stacked Horror Game Releases
Horror fans are spoiled for choice this spooky season, with a wide variety of games across genres, platforms, and developers to pick from.
Toward the end of our adventure, we learned to pull one or two zombies at a time and sneak around more effectively and skillfully. By the end of the playthrough, my friend was a veritable zombie skull smasher, and we’d mastered the tactic of tipping over the geeks and smashing them with a frying pan in the face for a quick kill.

Of course, our success wouldn’t last long, as a fateful attempt to open a window in a nearby house caused an alarm to go off, which then caused a massive horde to destroy the small outpost we’d outfitted with curtains on every window. Ultimately, just like anyone who ventures off to playProject Zomboid, we’d succumb, screaming as they consumed our flesh — because inProject Zomboid, it’s not a matter of whether you’ll die; it’s a matter of when.
