Everything We Know So Far About SAROS
SAROS’s announcement trailer is a cinematic piece that shows just enough to draw people in and peak their curiosity about this sci-fi story. As said in the trailer, “every time the sun dies, madness reigns” as a massive monster is seen rising up in front of the protagonist.
Players take control of a powerful Soltari Enforcer named Arjun Devraj in what is said to be an emotional character and a look at what it costs to create a new future. With each death, the world changes and evolves, perhapssuggesting the game will feature a roguelike mechanic to it, building on its foundations fromReturnal. In the trailer, Arjun is heard saying “With every death, I always come back stronger”. Arjun is not alone on the planet, however, with more NPC cast to be revealed later who will help build on the emotional story of the experience.

Devs Discussed SAROS Being A New IP
AlthoughSAROSbuilds on the energy and experience thatHousemarque had withReturnal, Creative Director Gregory Louden states that they wantedReturnalto stand on its own, and thereforeSAROSis a new IPrather than a continuation of the story. On PlayStation’s blog, further detail is given about some of the game mechanic differences between the two titles:
A key gameplay distinction between Saros and Returnal is permanent resources and progression making every death valuable. After every death you will face a changed world, but in Saros you will be able to choose and permanently upgrade your loadout from an evolving set of weapons and suit upgrades to “come back stronger” to overcome the challenges you face on Carcosa. -PlayStation
