Sakamoto Days, unfortunately, failed to completely deliver with episode #5, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to be excited about with episode #6 and beyond. The series still does a great job of balancing action with heartfelt writing, even if it often falters visually, and hopefully, things will pick back up with episode #6.

InSakamoto Daysepisode #5, Sakamoto and Lu finished their fights with Boiled andAlexa Bliss' Obiguro, but that still left the question of who placed the bounty on Sakamoto, to begin with. Sakamoto’s group followed what seemed like a promising lead, and while they didn’t get any concrete answers,Sakamoto Daysepisode #5 still revealed to the characters and the audience the person who’s bound to be the main antagonist of the series. The story is only going to amp up from here, and overall, it will be great to watch it play out.

Sakamoto Days Episode 4 Review: A Step In The Right Direction

Sakamoto Days Episode 4 In Review

Overall, there was plenty to love about episode #4. While the same cheap animation tricks were still present, they showed up far less often compared to previous episodes, and as a result,Sakamoto Daysepisode #4 had the anime’s best action by far while also effortlessly injecting great comedy and new stakes at every turn.Sakamoto Dayshas been contentious among fans since before it even premiered, but episode #4 was an episode that showed thatSakamoto Daysstill has plenty to offer as an anime, with the only problem in hindsight being that episode #5 didn’t capitalize on that.

What Happened In Sakamoto Days Episode 5

Produced By TMS Entertainment; Directed By Takatoshi Suzuki

Sakamoto Daysepisode #5, “Source of Strength”, continued whereSakamoto Daysepisode #4 left off with Sakamoto and Lu fighting the assassin duo Boiled and Obiguro. With Lu, while her drunken state was initially a hindrance, Lu slowly gained the advantage over Obiguro as she fell further into her Drunken Fist technique. Lu sobered up before she could deliver the finishing blow, but surprisingly,Obiguro was so impressed with Lu’s power that she gave up the fight then and there, and she and Shin were able to leave with Aoi and Hana in peace.

Meanwhile, Sakamoto, now in a skinny form resembling his prime, continued the fight with Boiled, and despite the initial difficulties Sakamoto was having, he soon dominated the fight with his overwhelming speed and power and was quick to win it all. With Boiled having regained respect for Sakamoto, he decided to let bygones be bygones and give up on trying to kill him, and as good as that was to hear,Aoi overheard Sakamoto and Boiled’s conversation and Sakamoto was forced to tell her about the bounty on his head.

As upset as Aoi was about Sakamoto not telling her that assassins were after him, she ultimately forgave him and told him to hurry up and get rid of the bounty. The next day, Sakamoto, Shin, and Lu, with Sakamoto already back to his chubby self, went to a secret information site for assassins and learned the location of the Dondenkai, Boiled and Obiguro’s employers who might know something about he bounty. The three of them infiltrated Dondenkai headquarters to get information, but to their surprise, all the leaders of Dondenkai were dead by the time Sakamoto’s group found them.

Nagumo, who was at the Dondenkai for similar reasons, revealed that the Dondenkai massacre was the latest in a string of murders of assassins associated with the JAA. The culprit is a mysterious figure the JAA has taken to calling “X” or “Slur”, and while it was still unconfirmed,Nagumo believed that X was the one who put the bounty on Sakamoto’s head. Nagumo then warned Sakamoto that he’d be in trouble if he had so much trouble with Boiled, and on that note, the episode ended with everyone doing what they could to try and get stronger.

Sakamoto defeats Boiled

Sakamoto Days’ Anime Butchers One Of The Manga’s Biggest Fights

Sakamoto Vs. Boiled Deserved Far Better

Sakamoto Days’ productionhas always been a point of contention, and never has that shown itself more than with episode #5. Sakamoto’s fight with Boiled is one of the most iconic fights of the manga, and while there were some good shots, overall,Sakamoto Daysepisode #5 ultimately failed to sell the fight with Boiled thanks to its slow animation and poor visuals, with the above picture being an especially poor adaptation of what was shown in the manga. It was nothing but disappointing to see, especially after episode #4 seemed to be a step in the right direction, visually.

Sakamoto Days Makes Up For Its Visual Shortcomings With Excellent Story Progression

Sakamoto Days' Most Uneven Episode Yet

Visually speaking,Sakamoto Daysepisode #5 was probably the anime’s worst offering to date. As always, the animation was never outright bad, but with how much the manga is known for its kinetic fight choreography, animation that’s just average at best is nothing but a disservice to the source material. It’s especially bad for episode #5 because, as previously discussed,Sakamoto Days’ lackluster animationfailed to properly convey the full impact of Sakamoto and Boiled’s fight, one of the best fights in the manga, and something like that is impossible to defend.

Fortunately, episode #5 more than made up for things with its narrative beats. Not only did episode #5 firmly set up the Order and the main antagonist Slur, but with Aoi already learning the truth about Sakamoto’s bounty, the story now won’t run the risk of feeling repetitive by constantly forcing everyone to lie to her, resulting in a far better dynamic, all around. The way thatSakamoto Daysepisode #5 advanced its story from a narrative perspective more than makes up for its visuals, but hopefully,Sakamoto Daysepisode #6 and beyond will know how to satisfy both fields.
