Summary
I’ve been waiting for the next book in theGentleman Bastardseries for years, andScott Lynch’s latest update is reigniting my excitement forThe Thorn of Emberlain. The Republic of Thieveshit shelves back in 2013, and that’s the last readers saw of Locke Lamora and Jean Tanner. Lynch confirmed another book in theGentleman Bastardsequence, but it’s takingThe Thorn of Emberlaina while to become a reality. Waits are expected withlengthy fantasy series, but this doesn’t make them any less agonizing. Fortunately, the author has good news for readers eager to return to his world.
While attending the World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow, Scotland, Lynch shared an update on hisGentleman Bastardseries (viascottlynch.us).The author revealed that he’ll be releasing three novellas ahead ofThe Thorn of Emberlain— and it sounds like they’re fairly fleshed out already. While these novellas won’t be necessary to read before the nextGentleman Bastardbook, they do give readers something new to look forward to. By announcing them, Lynch has certainly revived my interest in the upcoming installment.

After 11 years without newGentleman Bastardcontent,Lynch’s novellas are an extremely exciting prospect. With the lengthy gap betweenThe Republic of ThievesandThe Thorn of Emberlain,I could use a reminder of why I loved this series so much in the first place. These sound like they’ll do the trick.

The Novellas Will Dig Deeper Into Our Favorite Characters
Judging by the way Lynch describes hisRoad to Emberlainnovellas, they’ll be the perfect lead-ins to the fourthGentleman Bastardbook. Lynch confirmed that each one will be around 40,000 words and that they’ll offer the chance for “a bit of a leg-stretch and some halting to smell the roses.” That doesn’t happen often in these stories, but it sounds like theGentleman Bastardnovellas will focus more heavily on the characters and their relationships to each other and the world around them. They’ll also provide context for why Locke and Jean head to Emberlain in book four.
Those who enjoy the action-packed, scheming storylines ofThe Lies of Locke Lamoraand its sequels can also expect some of that from Lynch’s novellas.

Those who enjoy the action-packed, scheming storylines ofThe Lies of Locke Lamoraand its sequels can also expect some of that from Lynch’s novellas. While they won’t drastically alter the plot of the main series, the author did promise “swearing, desperate schemes, and fast-paced bloodshed.” Overall,it sounds likeThe Road to Emberlainwill offer the best of both worlds. There’s no better way to prepare us for the next book in the series, and I can’t wait to see what Locke and Jean get up to in the year beforeThe Thorn of Emberlain.

Fans Of Scott Lynch’s Series Are Finally Getting Their Fill
Although the wait for Lynch’s nextGentleman Bastardbook is still a lengthy one, getting more three more stories makes up for it. While most of us believed we were getting one book in the near future, we’re now met with the pleasant surprise that numerous releases are on the horizon.I’m much less frustrated with the 11-year gap between booksknowing that there’s a lot planned for this series in the coming years. With any luck,The Road to EmberlainandThe Thorn of Emberlainwill prove worth the wait.
Of course, it’s possible theGentleman Bastardnovellas will delay the fourth book, as it sounds like they’re being released prior toThe Thorn of Emberlain.Even still,I’m happy to dive into any story that continues Locke and Jean’s arcs afterThe Republic of Thieves. I missed theGentleman Bastardseries, and I’m happy we’re getting so many more additions to it.
