Warning: Contains Spoilers forBirds of Prey #15!!!

TheBirds of Preyis home to some of DC’s most powerful women, and the team boasts a wide range of abilities. However, it’s not individual talent that makes them strong - it’s the bond they have with each other - and Black Canary knows that runs deepest with the secondBatgirl, Cassandra Cain. Cass has an extraordinary ability to connect with others, putting her at the heart the Birds of Prey.

Birds of Prey #15,by Kelly Thompson and Sami Basri, picks up withBatgirl’s undercover missionbeginning to go awry. Cassandra goes dark and sparks concern among her teammates, especially Big Barda, who has grown incredibly fond of her “Small Bat” since joining the group. Rather than let Barda’s worry turn into rage that may compromise the mission,Dinah assures her that Cassandra is “pretty much everyone’s favorite” and they have to trust in her ability to take care of herself.

Black Canary and Big Barda of Birds of Prey

Though Batgirl isn’t physically present for this moment, Black Canary succinctly captures everything that makes her special. Cass is overwhelmingly talented, but she’s also easy to love.

Batgirl’s Talent and Compassion Puts Her at the Center of the Birds of Prey

The Effect Carries to Every Team She Joins

Batgirl’s early daysdidn’t set her up for social success. Her father, David Cain, trained her as a weapon, refusing to teach her any spoken language or allow her any “normal” experiences of childhood. Meeting Barbara Gordon and Batman changed the trajectory of Cassandra’s life. Not only did becoming Batgirl give her purpose and a path to overcome the violence she was born into, but she learned to connect with real people. Her unique way of reading body language isn’t just for fighting. She can understand the feelings of others and has, consequently, grown into an incredibly compassionate person.

She’s steadfast, loyal, and easily one of DC’s most talented fighters, making it little wonder that she becomes the favorite for whatever team she aligns herself with.

Pairing that compassion with her unexpected humor and, of course, nearly unbeatable combat ability, makes Batgirl exceedingly versatile. She seems to fit like a glove into whatever team or family she’s part of, whether it’s working alongside Batman and the Bat Family, the Outsiders, her fellow Batgirls,or the Birds of Prey. Cassandra never compromises on her values but manages to fit herself in seamlessly with those who share them to some degree. She’s steadfast, loyal, and easily one of DC’s most talented fighters, making it little wonder that she becomes the favorite for whatever team she aligns herself with.

Batgirl Makes the Birds of Prey a Stronger Team

Though Cassandra’s relationships are compelling and plenty of people have her back, she gives as good as she gets. Not only can Batgirl clear a room of enemies in seconds, but she constantly looks for the good in others and helps them find it. She managed to break through a cursed and raging Barda and smooth things over between Cela and Barbara, all by reaching parts of them no one else thought of. She’s competent, empathetic, and easy to be around.Batgirlis the hero everyone wants on their team, and theBirds of Preyare better for having her.
