The introduction of Captain Park inSquid Gameseason 2 has been a game changer, and his betrayal in the finale indicates he could have a connection to the games, with one theory hinting at him being a former winner. While Gi-hun is once again involved in the competition, Jun-ho’s subplot sees him desperately trying to find the island where these sadistic challenges take place, resulting in him recruiting the help of Captain Park. Despite being shot last season,Jun-ho is still alive inSquid Gameseason 2, largely thanks to Captain Park finding and rescuing the police officer.

The fisherman found Jun-ho in the water after he fell off a cliff and took him back to the city, where he recovered from his injuries. Since then, the captain has selflessly helped Jun-ho look for the location of the games despite not having much faith they’d ever find them based on the number of surrounding islands. However, while his intentions seemed genuine at first, it quickly became clear there is more than meets the eye regarding the captain, which is vindicated byPark’s villainous betrayal inSquid Gameseason 2’sfinale, setting up a connection to the games.

It Makes Sense If Captain Park Was Previously Involved In The Games

His Suspicious Behavior & Betrayal Suggests He Is Tied To The Games

After Captain Park tricked Woo-seok into revealing Jun-ho’s plan, tinkering with the drone, and killing one of the mercenaries to cover his tracks, it seems all but certain he was previously involved in the games. His exact connection hasn’t been revealed, but Captain Park’s actions seem to confirm he is working with the Front Man. Randomly stumbling across Jun-ho in such a remote location seems like a complete miracle, making it more probable that the Front Man informed Park of his brother’s whereabouts before instructing the captain to take him back to land and keep an eye on him.

Park’s knowledge of the water means he should realistically be able to find the location he picked Jun-ho up from, but he may intentionally be keeping away from it due to his secret connection.

It would also explain why the duo never found the island. Park’s knowledge of the water means he should realistically be able to find the location he picked Jun-ho up from, but he may intentionally be keeping away from it due to his secret connection. While fishing for information from Woo-seok could be considered just morbid curiosity, killing one of the mercenaries after being caught with the drone all but confirms Captain Park has ill intentions. His desperation to avoid exposing his secret once again suggests he is helping the Front Man, as there are very few other explanations.

While it is also possible Captain Park is working for theFront Man’s replacement inSquid Gameseason 2as part of his organ harvesting organization, the direct link to Jun-ho makes him aiding the real Front Man more likely. Considering his behavior alludes to him having knowledge of the games, he must be involved in some capacity, and being a former winner would make a lot of sense, especially when looking at the evidence.

Evidence Captain Park Was A Squid Game Winner

The Series Has Provided Several Clues That Indicate Captain Parker Once Participated In The Games

Captain Park’s laid-back demeanor may not seem like that of someone who has survived the torment of the games, but looking at his similarities to In-ho, it’s not out of the question. The Tabpresented some convincing evidence that Park was once a former player, as back in season 1, Jun-ho came across an archive of winners during his investigation, with the 1990 champion being a man named Park Pil-sam. Naturally, this could be purely coincidence, but it feels like a specific detail to include, and even if he wasn’t the 1990 winner, he may be 2006’s sole survivor.

An intriguing Squid Game theory has been gaining immense attention since season 1 and might even come true in season 3 after season 2’s ending arc.

Park’s boat has the number 112 on it, which is the same number as the contestant who won 2006’s game, meaning he could well have been victorious in either year. Some viewers have also compared his attitude and constant drinking to Gi-hun before he entered the games, meaning if he was a former winner, it didn’t quite change his life in the same way. While Park’s connection to the competition was already one ofSquid Gameseason 2’s best plot twists, having him be a former winner would add even more drama heading into season 3, which is very plausible.

What Captain Park Being A Former Winner Would Mean For Season 3

Assuming Captain Park did once win the games, it would add a completely different dynamic to not only Jun-ho’s subplot but the show’s overall message. Park clearly doesn’t want Jun-ho to find the island, but if the detective can uncover his secret, it would give him even more knowledge than he could’ve imagined. Using both Gi-hun and Captain Park’s insider knowledge could allow the mercenaries to properly infiltrate the island and stop the games for good, which would make Jun-ho’s years of searching worthwhile and prove to his colleagues he was right about the island the entire time.

Squid Gameseason 3 is confirmed and will be released at some point in 2025. It will also be the show’s final season.

Still, Park’s potential status as a former player doesn’t spark much hope of an optimistic ending overall. With In-ho also being a previous contestant, it would mean at least two people who watched hundreds of others die in the pursuit of money stand by their decision and are even aiding the games' continuation. Given many of seasons 1 and 2’s players wanted to continue despite knowing the horrors that lie ahead, it’s clear the Front Man is somewhat valid in his perspective.

While Gi-hun, Jun-ho, and some of season 2’s contestants highlight the brighter side of society, the likes of Jung-bae, Yong-sik, Myung-gi, and Hyun-ju all voted to stay at various points despite being some of the more moral characters. Therefore, even if the central cast were able to eventually put an end to the games, there’s no guarantee they wouldn’t re-emerge beyond season 3 or be replaced by something even more sadistic, meaning Captain Park’s former player status could add a very dark spin toSquid Game’s overall message.
