Star Wars Outlawsmay have surprised some players upon its launch when the open-world scoundrel fantasy turned out to be a lot more stealth-focused than they may have expected. Considering Kay Vess' past as a thief and the fact that the whole game seems to be building up to a major heist, the idea that she might have to spend a fair amount of time sneaking around places isn’t exactly out of place, but some compulsory stealth sections have been the source of some controversy from some players.
The game’s creative director, Julian Gerighty, recently spoke withGamesradar+about this, noting that these instant-fail stealth sections can be “incredibly punishing,” citing one on Mirogana in the earlier section of the game, in particular. After looking at some of the recent player data, Gerighty noted that the difficulty may have been “a mistake"and stated that Massive Entertainment is looking to improve this.

He went on to give an idea of how this could be done, saying, “I don’t think it means removing the fail state completely, but I do think there are millions of low-hanging fruits where we can make it so much more enjoyable and understandable.“He noted that currently, the stealth sections feel “unfair,“which was never the team’s intention. There’s a patch planned within the coming week that will correct this to some degree.
Star Wars Outlaws Borrows From Other Ubisoft Stealth Titles
From Assassin’s Creed To Splinter Cell
WhileStar Wars Outlawsdoes incorporate several elements that depart from the traditional Ubisoft formula - gone are the traditional skill trees in favor ofthe “Experts” mechanicthat encourages players to explore the open world more fully - there is still a lot of familiarity for those who have played Ubisoft’s back catalog of titles. For example, Kay’s “Adrenaline Rush” ability resemblesSplinter Cell ConvictionandBlacklist’s “Mark & Execute” feature, and she can use Electrobinoculars to plan ahead before infiltrating a faction’s base, which works similarly to theFar Cryseries' binoculars by marking and tracking enemies and points of interest.
Star Wars Outlaws: How To Sneak Into Pyke Territory In Toshara
Getting into the Pyke Stronghold and infiltrating Gorak’s base is a tough early mission that Kay will have few abilities for in Star Wars Outlaws.
As for the actual stealth itself, this draws more fromAssassin’s Creed, particularly the likes ofOrigins,Odyssey, andValhalla,as Kay can hide in tall plants, with clouds of steam from vents filling the same purpose inside more industrial areas, although avoiding cameras does work the same asWatch DogsandSplinter Cell, where watching its movement is often the key to navigating through an area. Kay’s Merqaal companion, Nix, can take on a similar role toWatch Dogs' hacking to open doors or deactivate alarms from afar, but can alsohelp with stealth by stunning or distracting enemiesso Kay can deliver a takedown or move past them undetected.

While stealth was shown in gameplay footage forStar Wars Outlawsover a year ago in a sequence where Kay and Nix infiltrated a base, it is understandable that forced stealth sections aren’t for everyone. Therefore, it’s good that Massive Entertainment has taken note of this and tweaked it. It’s not clear exactly what changes are coming in the new patch, and hopefully, for those who do enjoy stealth, it won’t be nerfed entirely. Considering how the rest of the game has several options to toggle off elements such as minigames entirely or reduce the difficulty for enemy accuracy or health, there is the potential to add more options for stealth to make a more accessible Star Wars game for different kinds of players.
