Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Jedi Knights #1

Star Warshas revealed a very dark future, one where none other thanJedi Grandmaster Yodabecame a Dark Lord of the Sith. While the future is never set in stone and is always changing, the Jedi have the ability to see visions of the future, witnessing events that may or may not come to pass. Such was the case with Obi-Wan Kenobi when he was still a Jedi Padawan and the dark future he saw, not only for his own master Qui-Gon Jinn, but also for Yoda himself.

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Vision of the Future in Jedi Knights #1

In Marvel’s new and canonicalJedi Knightsseries, set in the years beforeThe Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan receives special training from Yoda following a mission involving several members of the Jedi Order, preventing a large-scale planetary war and forcing both sides to negotiate for peace. Seeing glimpses into the future, Obi-Wan’s vision is a collage of future moments, those that will actually happen in the future, as well as moments that will never come to pass, such as the surprising twist where Yoda is depicted as a Dark Lord of the Sith:

Shown wearing a dark black hood and wielding Force lightning, this dark and evil version of Grandmaster Yoda has essentially taken the place of Darth Sidious, who’s currently hidden and plotting in the shadows at this point in theStar Warstimeline.

They Can Do More Harm Than Good

Many of these new moments Obi-Wan sees will likely come to pass in future issues of Marvel’s newJedi Knightsseries. There are also a few moments that indeed come to pass in the established timeline, such asCount Dooku killing Master Yaddle. That said, some of the moments that will never come true are the most fascinating to see, such as Obi-Wan fighting a future version of himself, or of course Yoda as a powerful Sith Lord. As Yoda cautions the young Padawan, it’s impossible to know which moments will happen until more time passes and events become clearer.

“We’ve Already Lost This War”: Star Wars Finally Settles a Clever Theory About The Last Jedi

A new Star Wars comic helps settle a Last Jedi theory and its infamous “Broom Boy”, connecting to the original trilogy as much as the sequels.

There are plenty of moments in theStar Warstimeline where a fear of the future leads to said future coming to pass.Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas' visions and the creation of a clone army to save the Republiccome to mind, as does Anakin Skywalker and his fear that his secret wife Padmé would die in childbirth. Said fear drove Anakin to the dark side, and he tragically became the reason why she died. As such, it’s fascinating that Obi-Wan has also seen Qui-Gon dying at the hands of an assassin, though not at the hands of Darth Maul.

Master Yoda Never Turned To The Dark Side, But The Future Is Always Changing

A Possible Path For The Star Wars Timeline?

At any rate, one has to wonder what would have had to have taken place in theStar Warstimelineto drive a Jedi Grandmaster like Yoda to darkness. It’s a fun exercise to think about, as it must be quite the drastic alternate timeline for “Darth Yoda” to have emerged. He certainly would have been a major galactic threat given his years of experience and knowledge of the Force.Even though Darth Yoda isn’t real (and can’t hurt you), it’s pretty cool to see what he might have looked like had the diminutive Jedi Master embraced the dark side.
