In fact, although only red, blue, and green lightsabers were included in the original trilogy, astheStar Warstimelinehas expanded, lightsaber colors and designs have become much more creative.
The prequel trilogy introduced Darth Maul’s double-bladed red lightsaber and Mace Windu’s shocking purple lightsaber. Kyber Crystals Turn White When They’ve Been Purified Again
Star Warshas very recently shown the process of bleeding a kyber crystal on-screen, as Osha bled Master Sol’s blue crystal without even realizing she was doing it. Essentially, to bleed a crystal, one must pour all their anger and hatred into a kyber crystal, typically after winning a saber from a Jedi in battle. In this case, Osha was so full of hate for Sol after discovering he had killed her mother and framed her sister for it that she naturally turned the crystal red as she wielded his saber.
This process also requires deep empathy.
White lightsabers effectively go through the inverse process, where the kyber crystal that has been bled by a dark side Force-user is purified once again. This process hasn’t been shown on-screen in any ofStar Warscanon movies or shows, although the non-canon showStar Wars: Visionsdid depict the purification process. Interestingly, this process also requires deep empathy, wherein the Force-user purifying the crystal must try to understand the Force-user who bled the crystal initially.
Why Ahsoka Tano Has White Lightsabers
Although white lightsabers have appeared in non-canon shows and inStar Warsbooks, Ahsoka is easily the most prominent Jedi in the franchise who wields white lightsabers. In fact, her white sabers have now been featured in both animation and live-action. As is required of all white kyber crystals,Ahsoka obtained her white sabers after purifying two crystals from a dark side Force-user, specifically one ofthe Imperial Inquisitors, the Sixth Brother.
However, beyond just the purification process, these white sabers carry particular significance. White lightsabers are thought to represent one who has found peace and calm in the Force and shows true compassion, which would certainly make sense given the process required. This is also clearly in keeping with Ahsoka Tano’s character, especially recent updates to herStar Warsarc.
