Hiromasa Encouraged Masa To Leave His Room When He Was A Hikikomori
Like everySunnyepisode, episode 8 also begins with a flashback that reveals how Masa was always neglected by his stepfather. Even when Masa shows up on his deathbed, his mother prevents him from meeting him. After being ignored by his father all his life, Masa decides to shut himself inside his room and lives as a hikikomori for several years following his stepfather’s death. Despite Noriko’s best efforts, he refuses to leave his room and embraces loneliness instead of facing the outside world.
Desperate to get him out of his room, Noriko contacts his biological father, Hiromasa, hoping that he will give Masa a reason to step outside. When Hiromasa first shows up at Masa’s door and tries to convince him to leave, even his methods go in vain. However, whenhe finally tells Masa he is his biological father and offers him a place to stay by himself, Masa finally agrees to leave his room.

7The Flashback Discloses Masa’s Father’s Real Identity
Hiromasa Was The First To Spot Masa’s Talent In Robotics
Interestingly, the flashback confirms that Hiromasa is the same man who had delivered Sunny to Suzie’s home in the show’s opening episode. The opening arc ofSunnyepisode 8 also discloses that Hiromasa had first encouraged Masa to start working on robotics in his company. But despite being a part of Masa’s robotics journey from the beginning, Hiromasa seems clueless about what might have happened to him.
6The Flashback Walks Through How Masa Started Working On Homebots
What Begins As A Passion Project Eventually Helps Masa Find His True Purpose
In the episode 8 flashback, Masa moves to a secluded cabin after his father convinces him to leave his room. The cabin is furnished with everything Masa would need during his stay and accommodates a homebot. Although Masa initially wreaks havoc in the place, without worrying much about the consequences, he gradually grows increasingly interested in robotics after meeting the Trash Bot at his home. Realizing that the Trash Bot has several discrepancies and bugs in its programming, Masa starts working on it to make it a more effective cleaner.
The more he looks at Masa’s interactions with the Trash Bot, the more he realizes how gifted his son is.

While he does this, Hiromasa keeps a close eye on him and realizes he is unlike any other roboticist he has ever met. Hiromasa notices Masanot only manages to turn the homebot into a more effective cleaner but also codes several human traits into him, seemingly making him sentient in more ways than one. The more he looks at Masa’s interactions with the Trash Bot, the more he realizes how gifted his son is.
5Masa’s True Purpose As A Roboticist Becomes Evident
He Rediscovers His Own Humanity While Working On The Trash Bot
After noticing how Masa starts changing while working on the Trash Bot, Hiromasa comes to an intriguing conclusion. He says Masa’s purpose as a roboticist is not solely to improve a robot’s code and make it more human. Instead, his sense of purpose comes from himdiscovering his own humanity while working on the robots. This is an interesting insight because it also highlights how, just like spending time with Suzie has helped Sunny understand her true purpose, being with Sunny after Masa’s disappearance has helped Suzie retain aspects of her own humanity.

He also confronts Norkio for keeping him in the dark and not telling him the truth about his stepfather. To everyone’s surprise, Masa’s Trash Bot reflects his sentiments by attacking Hiromasa and treating him like trash.
This family argument makes Masa realize Hiromasa never wanted to stay away from him.Noriko made the conscious decision to raise him with his stepfather, Shigeru. The Reason Behind Masa’s Disappearance Becomes More Evident
After the episode 8 flashback ends, the present timeline picks up whereSunnyepisode 7left off and features an interaction between Hiromasa and Suzie. Hiromasa, Suzie, and Mixxy soon realize Sunny’s system shows four individuals with GPS trackers. Since they had previously assumed only three trackers existed, they get curious about the fourth person’s identity.
The fact that Masa knew how to create killer robots who would take lives to protect him also suggests Sunny might have killed someone from the Yakuza to protect him.
Hiromasa also reveals that before Masa’s disappearance, he left Sunny with him, asking him to give her to Suzie. This suggests thatMasa had a faint idea that his life was in danger. He seemingly knew the Yakuza were tracking him down, revealing why he gifted Sunny to Suzie to ensure she was safe. Unfortunately, before she can reunite with her son, one of Hime’s men catches her and points his gun at her head. This is when Sunny comes out of nowhere, seemingly intending to hurt Suzie.
