The British black comedy seriesSweetpeadelivered during its first season in late 2024, and now it is set to return for season 2 soon. Based on the book series by CJ Skuse,Sweetpeaconcerns an unassuming administrative assistant (Ella Purnell) who unleashes her violent side after the death of her father. Playing on many of the tropes of the female rage revenge subgenre,Sweetpeaturns everything on its ear by being shocking while also delivering a lot of morbid laughs. The so-called “coming-of-rage” show was billed as a miniseries, but there was clearly a plan in place to continue.

Reviews forSweetpeaseason 1were overwhelmingly positive, and particular attention was paid toYellowjacketsalum Ella Purnell, who continued her 2024 hot-streak in the leading role. While hardly the first TV series to play around with the idea of a complicated serial killer as its lead character (Dexter,Based on a True Story, ETC.),Sweetpeadoes so with a whip-smart sense of humor and over-the-top violence that adds a little something special. With the second season already renewed, there’s a clear path for Rhiannon’s rampage to continue, and there’s a chance thatSweetpeacould blossom into another long-running hit.

Ella Purnell Returns As Rhiannon

The cast ofSweetpeais anchored by the amazing performance ofFalloutandYellowjacketsstar Ella Purnell as the unassuming Rhiannon, andshe’s already confirmed to return in season 2. With Rhiannon’s life of crime only just getting started,Sweetpea’s second helping needs a star like Purnell to carry the character forward as she gets more and more twisted with each killing. The first season saw Rhiannon kill off a handful of people, and that means there are a few notable names who likely won’t be returning for the next season.

However, it’s expected that supporting characters like Nicôle Lecky’s Julia Blenkingsopp will return, especially after her escape from the country was left open-ended. Alexandra Dowling should be back as Rhiannon’s sister, Seren, while Ingrid Oliver’s Detective Diana St. John will be back on the case. Likewise, Marina (Leah Harvey) will have to learn from the fallout of her decisions throughout the first season. Finally, Jon Pointing’s Craig finally showed his hand in the season 1 finale, and his brutal treatment of Rhiannon might come back to haunt him.

Sweetpea Season 2 Story Details

Rhiannon’s “Coming-Of-Rage” Continues In Season 2

Though the debut season ofSweetpeawas only a brief six episodes, the series squeezed in a ton of shocking twists and turns that completely recontexualized the story. Rhiannon’s murders are driven by her rage that builds throughout the season, and she’s already begun to deal with the emotional toll that killing has put on her. The ironically named final episode, “Life 2.0”, was meant to be a big reset for Rhiannon, but it was nothing of the sort. With her new beau, AJ, finding out about the killings, Rhiannon murdered him to cover her tracks.

Sweetpea Ending Explained: Why Rhiannon Kills Again

Sweetpea’s dramatic final episode shocked viewers and ended on a cliffhanger, setting up a potential second season while offering a strong conclusion.

This changes everything, and constitutes the first killing of the series that Rhiannon herself can’t justify through her own twisted logic. Unlike the people she perceived as evil, AJ was a relative innocent, andshe’ll now have to continue killing to protect herself from the law. Craig’s theft of Rhiannon’s family business only helps to add to her rage, and that storyline isn’t over yet either. Similarly, Julia’s flight from the country was hinted at in theSweetpeaseason 1 finale, but it’s unclear if she’ll come back into Rhiannon’s life again.
