10 Weird Rules “Patients” Need To Follow On Dr. Phil

Dr. Phil might be known for it’s wild moments, but guests and audience members actually have many rules that they need to follow for the show.

Dr. Phil Kicked Bumfights Creator Ty Beeson Off His Show Out Of Disgust

Ty Beeson Came On Dressed Just Like Dr. Phil

Bumfightsis an ill-famed four-volume video series that primarily features high school students and unhoused people fighting one another. If that were not enough, it’s also been alleged that those who appeared were given money to encourage them (viaLJWorld). The first volume was made by Ryen McPherson, Zachary Bubeck, Daniel J. Tanner, and Michael Slyman, who then sold the “business” to two Las Vegas businessmen, going by the pseudonyms Ty Beeson and Ray Leticia. Dr. Phil invited Beeson onto his show on June 20, 2025.

McPherson and Slyman claimed that the man who appeared onDr. Philwas not Beeman, but an impersonator, as part of a prank pulled by the real Beeson and Leticia (viaRolling Stone).

Beeson showed up dressed exactly like Dr. Phil, with a bald cap and fake mustache. After briefly showing a few clips ofBumfights, and before the interview officially started, Dr. Phil threw Beeson off the show in disgust. The clip quickly went viral, in part because, while on stage,Beeson hurled accusations at Dr. Phil, claiming he exploited peoplein similarly difficult situations on his show.

It was a shockingly quick reversal from Dr. Phil, who could usually handle the most insolent guests. It was so strange the crowd did not seem to know how to react, and it’s hard not to wonder if Beeson’s words may have struck a nerve in Dr. Phil and a chord in the audience.Bumfightsis a poorly conceived and made product that clearly exploits people, but it could be argued that Dr. Phil is exploitative himself, bringing in desperate people, and using their stories for what is at its core, entertainment.

Some Of Dr. Phil’s Guests Have Appeared To Be In Distress On His Show

This was not the first timeDr. Phil has been accused of exploiting people on his show. Some ofthe most memorable guests onDr. Philhave straddled the line between entertainment and voyeurism. For instance, Dr. Phil once brought on Shelley Duvall, who was reportedly suffering from mental illness at the time, a move that was heavily criticized by the public (viaDeadline). In 2004, Dr. Phil’s behavior in an interview with a nine-year-old, in which he claimed the boy was a serial killer in the making, was called unethical and irresponsible (viaWashington Post).

What constitutes exploitation and what is simple entertainment is a much bigger question than it seems on the surface.
