2024’sThe Crownow has a VOD release date after releasing in theaters in August. What The Crow’s VOD Release Date Means For The Film

How The Bill Skarsgård Reimagining Fared In Theaters

Typically, a VOD release arriving so soon after a theatrical bow means the film wasn’t performing well at the box office. This certainly appears to be the case forThe Crow. Made on an estimated budget of $50 million, the film opened to only $4.6 million domestically and has since managed to gross $18.7 million worldwide. With a $50 million budget, the film was potentially looking at a break-even point of $125 million, a goal it clearly fell far short of.

10 Reasons The Crow’s Reviews Are So Miserable

2024’s The Crow has been met with poor critical reviews, and here are the 10 biggest reasons why the film is getting received so negatively.

The film faced widespread criticism in the months leading up to its release, with some viewers believing that the franchise should have been left alone after Lee’s tragic on-set death during the making of the 1994 adaptation. The Crow’s negative reviewsdid little to combat this pre-release criticism, with critics taking issue with the movie’s poor pacing and lack of thrills. Sanders' movie, as a result, now has only a 22% score onRotten Tomatoes, a far cry from the 87% of the 1994 film.

Our Take On The Crow’s Impending VOD Release

Will Rupert Sanders' Film Do Better At Home?

Sometimes, a film that struggles in theaters can enjoy a strong second life on VOD platform, and it’s possible that this will be the case forThe Crow. The film, for example, has a stronger audience score (now called the Popcornmeter) on Rotten Tomatoes of 64%. Though still lukewarm, this score does suggest thatthe reimagining played better with the general movie-goers who saw it than with critics.

WhileThe Crowcould end up becoming a modest hit on VOD, it’s unlikely to become enough of a hit to offset its poor theatrical performance. As a result, a new adaptationEric’s story from O’Barr’sThe Crowprobably won’t be arriving anytime soon.
