Warning: This article contains spoilers for the finale of The Legend of Vox Machina season 3.
InThe Legend of Vox Machinaseason 3 finale, there was a poignant and touching moment among the action that brought the whole team together again, even with Percy gone. Percy has been an integral member of the team, withhis story driving the plot of season 1’s story and his blossoming relationship with Vex being a growing central focus in season 3. Of all the members of Vox Machina, he’s one of the hardest to replace. Yet that’s exactly whereThe Legend of Vox Machinaseason 3left both Vox Machina and the audience after episode 7 when Percy was shot and killed by Anna Ripley, in a death that seemed more than permanent.

The loss of Percy understandably rattledthe members of Vox Machina, the first one of their comrades and friends to permanently fall in a way that wasn’t reversed with a quick resurrection spell. It left them all reeling, none more than Vex,who finally admitted to herself, too late, that she had been in love with Percy. But the others were deeply affected in their own ways, grieving the loss of their fallen friend for the next five episodes ofThe Legend of Vox Machina, which has already been renewed for season 4. They honored him as best they could, but the finale offered up an opportunity for them to do so as a team one last time.
Vax Used Percy’s Gun In The Final Battle Against Raishan
Percy Was With Them In Spirit - And In Soul
There was a brief shot in the final battle against Raishan, after Keyleth had channeled her new Earth Ashari powers and turned into her elemental form, where Raishan screams, “You can not hurt this body!” to which Vax replies, “Looks like she just did.” The shot cuts to him in a stance completely reminiscent of their fallen gunslinger, standing with Percy’s pepperbox gun straight out and looming larger than life in the foreground. It’s just a second or two,but it’s an incredibly poignant moment as it was Vax’s way of honoring their lost friend and making him a part of the final battle, just as he would have wanted.
Matt Mercer & The Legend of Vox Machina Cast Break Down Season 3 Arcs And Easter Eggs
Matt Mercer, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, and Taliesin Jaffe tease what to expect in The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 and share their favorite moments.
The moment was symbolic, as Vax chose Vox Machina’s most dire moment to abandon his trademark daggers and instead use Percy’s pepperbox for the first time. But the moment is even more layered than that,as it was also a literal inclusion of Percy: Vax has heard Percy’s soul crying out for help, trapped in the pepperbox gun. He knows that by pulling out the pepperbox, Percy is, both symbolically and quite literally, there with them for the final battle.

Their Relationship Came Full Circle
That it was Vax to hear Percy’s soul screaming for help and use his pepperbox in the final fight against Raishanshows just how far he has come regarding his feelings about Percy inThe Legend of Vox Machina. Percy and Vax have had a tumultuous relationship throughout the show. Initially, they butted heads because their personalities clashed: Vax’s insouciant arrogance and Percy’s sometimes condescending rigidness just didn’t mesh well. There was also a bit of macho male posturing as they figured out their group hierarchy, with both Percy and Vax feeling at various times that they were the team leader.

Later, however, Vax’s mere personality clash with Percy turned into true fury bordering on hate when Percy’s rash decision inThe Legend of Vox Machinaseason 2, episode 3 led to Vex being temporarily killed and Vax chained to the Matron of Ravens as her new champion. Annoying him, Vax could forgive, but almost getting his twin permanently killed was something he could not get past, and his attitude toward Percy remained angry and bitter for a long time. Eventually, though, they moved past that as Percy continued to have Vax’s back, especially after Vax saw the feelings his sister had developed for their companion.
By the time Vax carried Percy’s gun with him to use in the final fight,it was clear that he had well and truly buried the hatchet with his fallen comrade.Percy had regained his trust, not only as a friend, but also as a man Vax trusted with his sister. This was solidified later in the episode when Vax travels to retrieve Percy’s soul and tells the gunslinger that he loves him and that he’s his brother. It was a wonderful moment, but it merely gave voice to the earlier moment of Vax pulling out Percy’s pepperbox to ensure he was with them. Just like Vex, Percy is now someone he loves enough to never give up on, something that would have been unthinkable even a season ago.

Legend Of Vox Machina’s Changes To Percy’s Arc Make The Moment Possible
The Changes To His Death In The Show Made The Story Even Better
Interestingly enough,The Legend of Vox Machinahas changed the story considerably from the original Critical Role campaign, but it’s those very changes that made this full-circle moment possible. In the Critical Role campaign, Percy also died at the hands of his arch-nemesis, Anna Ripley. However, the other players were able to resurrect him fairly quickly – to be certain, his death ended that session on a cliffhanger, but the very next one found the other members of the party rushing into action to bring him to life.
Recasting Vox Machina In Live-Action: 10 Actors To Take Over The Critical Roles
Some actors are easy to picture in a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Vox Machina, provided the animated show’s stars don’t return.
The Legend of Vox Machinaseason 3, episode 7, however, made his return a lot less certain. For starters, they’d already pulled that trick with Vex in season 1, and in a TV show format, it would have been cheap to have another fake-out death. Secondly, the mechanics of it were a lot harder in the show.At Percy’s death, Orthax trapped Percy’s soul in the pepperbox gun, and without a soul, a character can’t be resurrected. Even if they could, the only person Vox Machina knew who had ever successfully done a resurrection spell, Kash, got squashed by Thordak shortly after Percy’s death. So it was a heartbreaking blow when the next episode opened with Percy’s funeral and internment in his family tomb at Whitestone.
Percy’s death was the most emotionally devastating moment ofThe Legend of Vox Machinaso far, especially as it appeared it may very well be a permanent death. Still, it was that soul-crushing turn of events that enabled the other members of the party to fully understand what Percy meant to them, particularly Vex and Vax. Without the grief and belief in permanent loss, Vax would never have been in a position to hear Percy’s soul crying out for help, or, later, to do something about it. It’s yet another example of the ways the show is making smart changes from the campaign to make the story even better.
