As 2024 gets ready to close out, Marvel Studios is getting closer to getting started onAvengers: Doomsday, with reports recently revealing thatChris Evans is to be a part of theAvengers 5cast.While details of his return are being kept under wraps, it appears that Robert Downey Jr. will not be the only cast member he will potentially be reuniting with.
In their coverage of Evans returning to the MCU inAvengers: Doomsday,Deadlinehas reported that sources say Anthony Mackie is also set to show up in the Phase 6 installment as Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Captain America. At the time of this story’s publication, Disney and Marvel Studios have yet to confirm either reports about Mackie and Evans.
What Anthony Mackie’s Avengers: Doomsday Return Would Mean For The MCU Movie
While time will tell how Evans is back, having Mackie’s Captain America inAvengers: Doomsdayis only natural, especially with the way that the MCU is currently positioning the character. Since Sam will be headlining his own movie in 2025 withCaptain America: Brave New World,this will likely eventually lead him to have to rebuild the Avengers, as the team’s status inthe MCU timelinehas been extremely unclear ever since the events ofAvengers: Endgame. As such, it makes all the sense in the world to have Mackie back for the highly anticipated Phase 6 film.
Even though it hasn’t yet been reported, it shouldn’t come as a surprise if Mackie also ends up being part oftheAvengers: Secret Warscast, too, mostly because that film will serve as The Multiverse Saga’s final installment. Whatever goes down inAvengers: Doomsdaywill likely cause most of the characters, if not all of them, to then be back forAvengers: Secret Wars. Given thatAvengers: Secret Warsis rumored to set up a soft reboot of the MCU, it only seems fitting to have everyone back for what could be the final time for many of them.
Our Take On Anthony Mackie’s Avengers: Doomsday Return
As exciting as it will be to see Mackie back as Captain America inAvengers: Doomsday,it will be particularly interesting to see if he and Evans' characters will be pit against each other, as the latter could potentially be playing an evil variant of Steve Rogers. Given Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is a crucial part oftheAvengers: Doomsdaycast, having Evans play a twisted Captain America variant seems suitable in much the same way. But for now, the world will have to wait and see who else will be back forAvengers: Doomsdayas principal photography gets closer to starting.
