Warning: SPOILERS for Jurassic World: Chaos Theory season 3!Jurassic World: Chaos TheoryExecutive Producer Scott Kreamer embraced the dark paths the show took characters like Brooklynn.Chaos Theoryhas steadily developed into one of the most intense thrillers in theJurassicfranchise. After the explosive ending ofChaos Theoryseason 2, the Nublar Six have been shaken not just by the discovery that Brooklynn has survived her apparent death, but by the fact that she has been working with the dinosaur black market.

Season 3 balances the group struggling to reckon with this discovery with Brooklynn’s undercover operation in the market. During an interview withScreenRant, Kreamer discussed the importance of keeping the character conflicts complex inJurassic World: Chaos Theoryseason 3, finding a surprising humanity for villains like the Handler, and the direction that a prospective season 4 could take.

Scott Kreamer Addresses Brooklynn’s Journey In Chaos Theory Season 3

“That’s The Stuff That Makes You Excited To Be A Writer”

Brooklynn has the most extreme arc inJurassic World: Chaos Theoryseason 3, with her development from a popular influencer to an aspiring journalist taking her deep undercover amidst Soyona Santos’s operation. The result has been a character who is increasingly forced to push the moral line frequently in the season. Looking back at Brooklynn’s arc across the season, Kreamer recalled how the writer’s room was rarely conflicted about pushing her so far. “Even since the beginning of season 1, we were sort of sewing these questions about who the absent Brooklyn really is, if her friends really knew the person she was.”

“We always loved the idea of Brooklynn wondering who she is and trying to define herself,” Kreamer explained. “Now that she’s embedded with a criminal, but a charismatic and powerful one, it challenges her. We always liked the idea of Santos seeing some of Brooklynn in herself, and that goes both ways.” He likened the story to a Donnie Brasco dynamic, adding that “she’s been alone on this journey for a while now. The question of whether she is going to end up and if she necessarily knows where she wants to be.”

Played by Jenna Ortega inJurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, Brooklynn has been played inJurassic World: Chaos Theoryby Kiersten Kelly.

One of Kreamer’s favorite moments of the season came with the inclusion of Davi, a fan of Brooklynn who has followed her into journalism. Fearing that his naivety will get him killed and her exposed, Brooklynn’s harsh treatment of him is a major moment in her arc for season 3. “I couldn’t wait to get to that stuff. When you’re breaking a season and you think about these sort of tentpole moments — the scene where Brooklynn is pointing [the laser pointer that directs the Atrociraptors] at Davi and threatening him without even realizing it?

“That’s the stuff that makes you excited to be a writer.” It’s clear in the show that Brooklynn’s evolution has weighed on her, but it’s also seriously impacted the rest of the cast. Brooklynn return to the group will have an undeniably different dynamic going forward, which is something Kreamer and the rest of the team were aware of.

This isn’t the kind of show where we can go back to how it was in season 1. Okay, the gang is back together. But that doesn’t mean it’s like, ‘Gee willikers, let’s go fight the bad guys together, all is forgiven!’ Especially as these characters are coming of age and figuring out who they are and where they fit into the world… I don’t think Brooklyn can just be like, hey, everything’s great now. That’s not the kind of story that we want to tell.

The Nublar Five Splinter In A Major Way In Chaos Theory

“There Was A Lot Of Debate In The Room”

A frequent plot thread ofChaos Theory(as well as the show that preceded it,Camp Cretaceous) is that the Nublar Six are frequently hiding secrets from one another, resulting in tension and bad decisions. This carries over to season 3 ofChaos Theory, where the betrayal felt by Sammy and Kenji only exacerbated other tensions in the group, ultimately splitting them apart by the end of the season. Reflecting on how the writers approached the group splintering, Kreamer admitted there was “a lot of debate in the room” over which characters would take which side in the fight, with Darius and Ben inviting a lot of discussion.

This disagreement even ended up being the final nail in the coffin that was Sammy and Yaz’s relationship, resulting in the pair taking different directions in the latter half of the season.“Sammy is hurt, and Sammy has always put family first. We liked the idea of Sammy, she’s led with her heart for so long. When we catch up with her at the beginning of season one, she’s not in a great place. I’ve said this before, but how many of us are still with the people that we were with at 16? There were already cracks in the relationship when we started this series. It’s not like they went to therapy; they sort of set it aside.”

It was important to Kreamer to show the same-sex relationship not as a flawless couple but as a realistic romance. “The tricky thing was really making sure it wasn’t one-sided. We didn’t want it to feel like ‘Oh, clearly Sammy is wrong’ or ‘Yaz is clearly wrong.’ Everyone’s going to have an opinion. Some people are just going to be Team Sammy or Team Yaz. We really took pains to make sure that it all made sense. You may not agree with everybody’s decision-making, but you should at least be able to see where they’re coming from.”

Humanizing The Handler In Chaos Theory Season 3

“I Don’t Know How, But I’m Really Liking This Character”

One of the most interesting elements ofChaos Theoryseason 3 is the reintroduction of the Handler. The assassin uses Atrociraptors to carry out her murders across the world, with a silent horror movie villain vibe that makes her stand out from the rest of the antagonists in the franchise. While the Handler was seen in season 1 and proved to be a quietly terrifying character, the Handler becomes a surprisingly more developed character across the course of the season. Separated from the dinosaurs she bonded with, the Handler becomes increasingly ruthless in her attempts to be reunited with them.

“We managed to humanize the Handler of all people,” Kreamer laughed. “We really liked what happened in the last episode of season 1. She put the mission aside because she was concerned about her raptors. She loves them. They’re her kids, basically. As we started exploring ideas for this season, that was our jumping-off point. We knew we wanted to bring her back. That’s just where things felt like they naturally led. I don’t know how, but I’m really liking this character.”

That surprising humanity didn’t save the Handler from a gruesome fate in the season 3 finale. After fighting Brooklynn and liberating her raptors from Santos, the Handler is confronted by another dinosaur. Despite her imposing and scary actions throughout the show, the dinosaur quickly dispatches the Handler in a brilliantly blunt moment. “It’s one of those things. And you know, I didn’t, I didn’t necessarily want it to be funny, but there’s only so much we can show. There was a version where the whistle she dropped had blood on it, or you would see more of her legs. At the end of the day though, this was as far as everyone let us go.”

“[Netflix] Hasn’t Announced Whether Or Not There Is Anything Else Coming Up”

Jurassic World: Chaos Theoryseason 3 ends not necessarily on a cliffhanger but with very clear intentions for season 4. With Brooklynn freed from the arrested Santos, she rejoins her friends to head straight for the Biosyn headquarters — unknowingly setting them to reunite with Sammy and Kenji as they approach the same location in search of the captured Bumpy. Kreamer was the first to admit that Netflix “hasn’t announced whether or not there is anything else coming up.”

How Jurassic World: Chaos Theory Season 3 Directly Ties Into 2022’s Dominion Movie

Chaos Theory has always been on the sidelines of the Jurassic World franchise, but the animated show just crossed over with the live-action films.

The possibility that it could come to an end with season 3 was why Brooklynn’s storyline in season 3 ends in a fairly conclusive and satisfying manner. One of the things that has Kreamer excited about the possibility of season 4 is the way that the show will continue to thread the needle between that plot and the events of 2022’sJurassic World: Dominionwhile also bringing the Nublar Six back. “Dominion is taking place in Biosyn Valley too, so that that seems to be where the story would be leading if — if they give us more runway to tell that story in Jurassic World: Chaos Theory season 4.”

Jurassic World: Chaos Theoryseason 3 is now available to stream on Netflix.
