Edwin excitedly greets the lawyer upon her arrival home from her first day at work, and they discuss her progress. Things continue to go off without a hitch as the plan progresses with thehelp of Madeline’s 12-year-old grandson, Alfie (Aaron D. Harris). He is there to help with planning and technical support until episode 4 when the first tear in Madeline and Edwin’s alliance forms.

The doors are wide open for Madeline’s revenge plan in Matlock, but the development comes at the worst possible time for Kathy Bates’ character.
Alfie becomes exhausted from assisting Madeline with her revenge plan on top of his schoolwork. He even lies to his teacher, saying he’s sick while actually wanting a free pass home to help his grandmother. Seeing his grandson burn out causes Edwin to pump the brakes, telling Madeline that she needs to operate without Alfie. While she perseveres without her grandson, even garnering her husband’s help, it all comes to a head in episode 6 when the case causes Madeline to have a panic attack. At this point,Edwin convinces her that she needs to drop the plan entirely.

Still, other events will cause the couple to rehash their differences.
